howdy

Post by timbertoes »

New here, from DFW area. Have been lurking a bit. Good info, appreciate the good posts.
Planning on attending some "open to the public fun matches" at the Haltom City Club.
I am a lefty with all right hand bolt actions. Fun to watch me take forever to get the round cycled :)

Welcome to Steelchickens. Tell us about your bolt guns, what optics you will be using , etc. One of the guys here in CO. shot quite a bit at Haltom while he was stationed in TX.

Thanks, all I have right now are
Marlin 880SQ and a Winchester Wildcat sporter. scope wise, Tasco 10-40x50 mirage maker, lol. just one.
I need to get a left handed bolt gun. Maybe I can find a Savage MkII in lefty or a CZ.
Just for conversation, I have a CZ in .221 fireball, and a Tikka lite in 6.5x55.

.221 FB rock. I bought one just to have it and now its my favorite gun. Whacks wood chucks and coyotes with ease. :x . But you need to find yourself a lefty gun soon, lifes to short to put up with the grief of working the bolt on the wrong side. And it gives you the excuse for buying a new gun! :ymhug: \m/

Haltom City RPC shoots cowboy rifle / hunter pistol first Saturday (.22 at 9:30, pistol cart centerfire 1:30), smallbore rifle second Saturday 9:30, any .22 fun match on pistol targets third Saturday 9:30. All are open to public. Expect 15-30 shooters. Usually 3 banks of targets, pull string resets. Range opens at 8am for setup, practice when ready.

Went to my local shop and ordered a Savage MKII GL (left hand) :)
Should work out well, to see if I can develop the ability to hit the targets.
The whole concept of silhouette is exciting. Plinking at it's highest level!
Heck even learning to spell silhouette is an accomplishment 8-x

lol, it was only a week or so ago, I went and got a Win. Wildcat sporter. Again, with the bolt in the wrong direction. And the $50+ scope mount.
Too much spent on it. Maybe....just maybe I can get out of it, on a trade or something.

You will take a big hit if you take it back to the dealer. It would be better if you hang on to it and give it to your son or daughter or niece or nephew or wife or cat or dog. if there a righty. Innocent said it best.

AD9.....I've also got a 221 fireball and your right those little pills are fun as hell to throw down range. Mine's a custom build that I happened to come across at the right time. It's an old Sako( i believe from the 60's) that was originally chambered in .222 but the builder wanted a 221 fireball so he put a Kreiger barrel on it and a jewell trigger that if you breath on it it goes off. Cloverleafs em at 200 yards with the right hand load, if not half a minute with factory loads. It's a blast. :D

yes, come to think of it, with a hi power target scope on the savage, I will still need a low power scoped squirrel and raccoon .22.

I use my .221 FB to hunt predators. On bobcats, it is a real fur saver. About all I have hunted for the past 5 or 6 years is predators.
This year I started duck hunting, partly becuase I bought a some tooling to turn duck calls :).
With the 6.5 swede, I bugged a freind a bunch into taking me hog hunting, and we got 2 boars down with it.

Neat thing about the .221 is how the sound does not carry as far. Also have a old Savage 340b in .222, it was given to me in rough condition.
it's much better looking now, and scoped. but has enough wear in the bore...... not experinced with that, thinking lighter bullets, at slower velocites to get some accuracy back ?
