513 Matchmaster Overhaul

Post by BlauBear »

I'm overhauling a 1941 vintage 513T and need someone to re-blue the metal. Any recommendations out there? Current bluing is almost gone and the lettering is already faint, so they need to be very careful. I have a couple of candidates in mind, but now I'm looking for recommendations.

Nope - obsessed. After scrubbing the finish off the stock last night and checking the date of manufacture, the OCD is kicking in on this project. Last week I researched possible bluers and learned enough about the process to choose someone carefully, but it's tough to find references.

I also have a Remington 513T that I bought 15 years ago (or so) for just over $100. It was a mess and I had fun fixing a large crack in the stock and refinishing the wood and generally making it look like a 22 LR version of a Marine sniper rifle. I found a 4x Burris rimfire scope with adjustable objective taller target-type elevation knob and fine crosshairs with a dot in the center.

I had no idea at the time the history of this rifle series. Unfortunately, the bore is pitted and it will shoot several rounds in a nice tight group and then the next one will be a flier. I found that Aquilla Colibri ammo worked very well and my girlfriend and I use this combination for silently dispatching starlings in our back yard. I think she outshot me with my own rifle with more hits than I have.

I just found that Numrich has newly made replacement barrels and I think I will have to get one this next year.

Though I have not yet shot in a silhouette match, I am thinking that this would be a rifle I would like to put to use in such an event. Does anyone know if the 513T meets the size and weight restrictions for rimfire silhouette matches?

Good luck with your 513 project. I hope you will post the progress and results.

Bart, weight and the bull barrel disqualify the 513T from Hunter Class, but it would work fine for standard class if your back is up to the job! That's a lot of barrel hanging out there!

Bear I did one of the 513 t's about 20 -25 years ago. It had set in a closet for 30 years and I took it to the laundry tub with soap and water. The barrel had been cut to 20 inches and had many holes drilled on the barrel and receiver for various sights that had been used. I recrowned the barrel and took it out to shoot it. I was plesantly surprised that it shot a good consistent 1 inch at 100m with super x or ely brown box. The following year I burned up many cases of ammo learning about the rifle, wind conditions and all other kinds of things. With the 20 inch barrel and a cut down stock and an old 8x24 tasco it weighs in at 8.75 lbs. The triggers are the biggest downfall of the 513 t. If you get to messing with it make sure you have spare parts b-4 you start working on it.. I also got another stock and reworked that to suit the silhouette game and me. If you can get another barrel you may try to cut it down to 20 or 22 inches and maybe have someone put a small taper on it if you wanted to shoot in the hunter class. In thinking you may want it to stay or be able to be returned to original remember the serial number and date code are on the barrel. I could get some photos to you if you wanted. Have fun and a Merry Christmas Chad

Yankee, I always enjoy pictures!

This one will probably hang on my office wall and shoot in our Club matches a couple times of year. It has peep sights and I plan to keep it full Summer Camp for now, just for nostalgia.
