Transporting ammo and rifles to Raton

Post by Seamus O'Grady »

I was reading the airline restrictions on transporting ammo and there is an 11 pd. weight limit per customer. Also a five pound per case limit. I probably need only a brick for Raton but I seem to remember almost running out last year in Ridgway.

Can ammo be shipped in a rifle case?

What does a brick of ammo weigh?

Everyone have a safe trip and I'll see you there.

Seamus,
Your interpretation and others of the requirements can be totally opposite. From Orlando the ammo must be in a seperate locked hard case from the rifle. "Two" box limit (I wrap two bricks in bubble wrap) and/or 11 lbs limit. So far I've had no problem, but it is required that the ammo be in factory boxes, so if you are travelling with reloads, put them in a factory box. From El Paso, they want the ammo in the case with the rifle....figure that out?????
I have flown from Portland, with ammo in a seperate hard locked case and the only thing I have seen there is TSA agents always inspect the rifle cases, no matter what so make sure you have plenty of time for them to fondle the firearm and still make the flight. Never done an in out of SeaTac but Teresa E. has and I know she flys with seperate ammo case from the rifles.
Never been pushed on the weight limit, other than I usuall pack the ammo in with clothes/spotting scope etc. and the overall weight pushes the 50 lb limit of SW.

Hope this helps but it probably only adds more confusion.

The rules vary with the airline. Some let you put ammo in the gun case and some don't. You can put the ammo in your suitcase but be sure to tell them that you have done that.

MARY:

I found out last time that you should remove all the ammo from your shooting vest if you put it in you carry out bag! I Meet some realy nice TSA employees including the main man at Jackson, MS.

I put the ammo in the case with the gun. The TSA has no problem with it. When the gate agent asked I always have less than 10 pounds.
