New Concrete Firing Lines

Post by atomicbrh »

Magnolia Rifle and Pistol Club in Jackson, MS. has recently made many range improvements. All of the Rifle Silhouette Firing Lines are now Concrete. This concrete was really finished right with no dips or high points.

Dirt work has also been done to improve drainage and the low spot in the Air Rifle Range Parking lot.

The Magnolia Board of Directors has given me permission to cordon off the complete East End of the facility so there is no through traffic of any kind to interrupt courses of fire.

If poor accomodations(such as dirt firing lines) have discouraged you from shooting with us in the past then forget about them and come shoot with us.

Our rails are permanently installed in the ground so all we have to do is put the targets on the rails.

We have only two NRA Approved Air Rifle and Smallbore Rifle Silhouette Matchs left in 2009.

The dates for those Matchs are Saturday August 8, 2009 and Saturday September 12, 2009.

If you are from out of town and need to spend Friday night in a hotel , I have connections at a very nice Hotel.

Hope to see some of you at our Matchs now that our facility is greatly improved.

Great work Bobby... I know this have been a labor of love for you!

So the real question ... When is the MS state match going to be?

I have been asked this questions many times. Sad to say that there will never be a Mississippi State Smallbore Match unless another range is formed in our area. As the range exists now there is only enough space for 20 of each animal. So, there can only be eight shooters on a relay. Magnolia is a very small range in acreage. Also there is a lack of participation in Smallbore Silhouette compared to other disciplines at our range. There may be what seems to me like a hundred people show up for a monthly IPSC or Steel Challenge Handgun Match while I have only had one or two people show up for a Smallbore Silhouette Match. Yet, the Magnolia Board of Directors still supports Rifle SIlhouette tremendously for the small number of Silhouette participants.

Now that stated. There may be a Mississippi NRA State Air Rifle SIlhouette Match or Outdoor Air Pistol Match in the future but the problem there will be getting a three day weekend long slot when there is not a powderburning match scheduled.

Building this program has been nothing but pure torture every step of the way. There have only been a few moments that have appeared to make it worthwhile. My number one memory is when only three people stayed after Smallbore to shoot the Air Rifles. What was special were the three people who stayed to shoot. They were my son, and two multi-time Louisiana State Smallbore Champions in the middle of the season when their skills were at a peak level. This was the first time Jerry Tureau had touched a Target Air Rifle and he shot a Master Class score. The wind was blowing the pellets around during target air in the mid-afternoon heat, the shooters were playing the conditions like a concert violinist playing a difficult concerto, while my wife and I observing this match could feel the "magic" in the air. This was something really special to watch.

The second Match Director memory involves a newbie middle-aged competitor that I will not mention by name. We had finished Smallbore and I was hot, dirty and dead tired. All I wanted to do was forget Air Rifle and go home. Then, this competitor that had borrowed a rifle to shoot Smallbore pulled out a pair of beautiful HW Sporters. This fellow told me that the Match we were about to shoot was the culmination of his life-long dream. He told me he had never had a stable enough job to buy really good equipment and shoot silhouette until just recently and that he had dreamed about shooting a real Sporter Air Rifle Silhouette Match since his youth. Needless to say my wife and I after hearing that settled in to the Air Rifle Range for the long haul that day, ran every Air Rifle relay and had the honor of seeing a really fine person make a dream reality. This fellow has become a regular visitor to our home and a good friend.

You just never know what unexpected good experiences you will have when you start directing Matchs.

My question is will the NRA approve a Mississippi State Smallbore Match to be held outside Mississippi at a "well-known" nearby Louisiana range?
