What a Weekend.
I just got back from a 2 day match here in Colorado. (Teddy Roosevelt Match). Me, wife and 11 year old son shot the match. First official match for son and wife. I got moved into A class first day and today shot first leg into AA in both divisions. 23/40 Standard and 25/40 Hunter. But that was not the funnest part. My wife shot unclassified and won shootoff after shooting a 10 to win one of her matches. Son shot a high for him of a 7/40 then shot on a team with a master shooter to win a Bandito match. Then he took second beating alot of people in a Buffalo shoot (steel buffalo at 150 yds, one shot , miss and your out). My nine year old is chomping at the bit to shoot a match, he needs a little more training first but hit his first chicken during practice. What a family oriented sport, we are having a blast.
THanks to all of those who put on the 2 day match held in the beautiful Colorado mountains. Great match guys and gals!!!!

Tell them: "Welcome to the game!"
At our club matches, we allow youngsters just starting out to shoot the match off bags. That gives them the opportunity to get a feel for procedure, learn sight settings, experience the effects of wind and mirage and develop confidence. Once they're comfortable we have them stand up with us big kids...
We always like to see newbies starting out!

Usually called "Tres Banditos" for the three members of each team. You can play the game with two people per team if need be or one on a team or whatever works.
You need a set of targets for each team either five or ten targets.
Both teams are on the line at the same time. The teams are usually given a "Ready" and then "Fire" command. At that time each team shoots at their bank of targets. The first team to knock down all their targets is the winner. Usually there is some sort of wager or entry fee or something to make things interesting. It is something fun to do after a match or at lunch time. Also might try shooting chickens at 100m or shooting chickens facing you and things like that. You can also do a B class team vs an A class team shooting on shoot off target for that class. Be creative and have fun.

There are variations. I've only done one. Subject to correction I think it goes something like this:
100 meters. Three shooters per team. Only two teams shoot at a time. Ram on pad number three. Chicken in front of ram. Turkeys on pads two and four. Pigs on pads one and five. No time limit. Ram must fall before chicken. If they fall together, team is DQ'd. Official with a scope assigned to each team. When ram falls and chicken does not, official calls "Clear." When chicken falls first, or same shot takes both chicken and ram, official calls "DQ."
You can figure strategy for yourself but here's a hint: Be sure everybody gets the word that the time pressure is off when the other team DQ's. Some of us are superb shots but don't hear so well. Ahem.
Real fun is when both go "clean" and everybody gets too excited to hit the last animal, which is often the chicken.
Sort of the "rattle battle" of silhouette.

Banditos
Ya-all gotta give the range commands in Spanish and you gotta have a bunch of hecklers to confuse the issue. It is a great way to kill time while the stat people are figuring out how to give the trophys away. I think the simpler you make the targets the better off you are. Pigs on the turkey line seems good. Just make sure that you get the teams even so you don't get all the masters on one squad.

Ours went something like this. 2 shooters per team usually a master paired with a B or 2 AA shooters paired etc just to keep things even. 3 teams started at one time. 10 pigs per team with a Chicken in the middle. Right shooter shoots pigs from right to left and left shooter shoots pigs from left to right after all pigs are knocked off then you shoot the chicken. which ever team shoots chicken first wins and moves on the face the next winners. You start with the gun unloaded on stand and 2 loaded 5 round magazines with extra ammo that you would load one at a time after your mags were empty. No Vests were allowed.
It was a real hoot!! I wanted to shoot it again oh and the winning team split 12 dollars. The bandito match cost 1 doller per shooter
