Re: Stiller Rimfire
Oh no is an understatement, 'we're' in trouble now too (I include Kitty in this as well). Wonder what the weight difference will be compared to the 54.18 action.

You give me too much credit Mary! There are plenty of others around more than happy to help stirring things up.Innocent wrote:BB,
rumor has it that you are the trouble in Ft Smith. So what is a new action and barrel with a Pharr stock going to cost you this time?
What caliber you going for?

Build budget? Figure a Stiller rimfire action with Timney trigger, Broughton barrel and Nesika Bay stock. If you must know the ugly truth, set aside about two thousand if you're just writing a check. A similar rifle using an Anschutz action and keeping the Anschutz barrel would cost about the same as a Stiller action and custom barrel, but if you want a custom barrel on the Annie add about $500. I kept the Anschutz barrel because they're great barrels and the factory balance suits me fine.
Some of the parts are already bartered for and there's time to finagle more before actually needing any cash. The rule for '09 is no new cash goes into guns, so it's all based on barter and the sale of shop surplus. At Winnsboro last year I was driving Evelio nuts because this was the rifle I had decided to build, but no CNC 40X actions were available so I "settled" for an Anschutz. Apparently, I should have been more patient.
Just me - I need to have a project, it has to contain challenges and it saves money to stretch it out as long as possible, since finishing one means starting another. That's as much fun as shooting, especially when you can't go to the range.

The closest I can come to discipline on this is limiting cash that can be diverted to builds, and defining what I really need and want, then waiting and searching. Doing that got the high power right, and I should have applied that to the rimfire - I'd be way ahead in parts and cash. When the action I wanted was unavailable I went with the easy choice instead of waiting.

Never heard that! Now we need Evelio's observations, since he built Stiller centerfires for Bob and me. I lack the tools or skills to know what that's about, but would like confirmation or denial.edgerat wrote:until seeing one of jerry's new rimfire actions in person I cannot comment but will say that his centerfire actions need just as much work as some remingtons in order to be square and true. Look hard....

Toys, toys...difference between men and boys..BB you ask for confirmation or denial.McAlice has a machine shop Mary - he makes his own toys... We have to buy ours.
In working for a gunsmith for 14 years, I have seen many different firearms modified, tweaked, butchered (all because a manager misread??? the rules and cut a barrel to 12 inches because he measured from the butt of the stock), my opinnion is if it works for you and is safe and legal, then go for it. Many writers will write up great things about those that tickle their fancy (either by good meals/booze or free samples)and not write glowing reports about practical functional firearms. All in the marketing. How many salesmen have to 'sell' a Remington? They are advertised in every sporting magazine, and outdoor publication, and production, in all the forms of media. So keep the money flowing for the economy as the lawmakers haven't truly looked at how much tax is already coming off of the firearm industry.
As for McAlice, he has his priorities with regard to his toys, and they seem to work for him.

Stillers action
Bob,
I actually done 3 so far, and all 3 were damm near perfect when I indicated them in the lathe. The face of the action, the threads and the locking lugs were all square with each other within .0005" TIR and .001" with the OD of the action.
I have done many Rem. actions, and never seen one with less than .015" TIR run out, and the threads sucks, hell they even Loctite the barrels in, why, I don't know. The 40X actions are somewhat better than the 700 but still nowhere close to the Stiller.
The only thing I don't like is the coating in the bolt, it won't allow it to slide smoothly, I also dislike the fluting in the bolt, it will pick up small debris more than a smooth bolt would.
Evelio.
