Noticed something from you in the mail today, Steve. I'll check it out once I get the kids in bed tonight and will show it off at our next few matches.

I am a subscriber to Small Caliber News. I've had it for a year and thought it had good content. I almost let my subscrition expire until the last issue. I thought you did a great job Steve, that is why I renewed. I almost let it go because there was several editors notes in the middle of an article contradicting what the author said. I didn't think it was the place for an editorial in the middle of something someone worked hard on. I didn't notice anyof that in the last issue either.

Thanks Woodchuck, I appreciate it.

Well, the spring edition it now out and should be getting to the subscribers soon. It's a bit of a catch-all, and I had to get some articles out that have been sitting in the hopper.

Once I get a few more articles off my plate, we can get an edition about silhouette rollin.

Thanks again for the support,

s.

Thanks for reviving this thread - I was looking for the website the other day and couldn't remember the name. It's bookmarked now, and a subscription has been entered.

Going under?

I just talked with the publisher as to why I haven't recieved my issue and she said the magazine is up in the air right now so I would hold off if you are wanting to send in a subscription. I hope things work out for them because it filled a good niche.

I've been mulling over the idea of a printed publication for the silhouette enthusiasts and how to make it work. The internet is great for communication and news but, as pointed out in a prior post, requires a certain amount of technology to use. Subscriptions are tough also because who wants to pay for a magazine where only a small percentage of the articles are within our personal interest within the niche of silhouette? For example; I am not interested in pistols. I admire the skill to use one but have no desire to take up this area of the hobby. The annual pistol issue will get a look through but I've essentially upped my per issue/article spend to reward ratio.

Another area of interest for me is aviation. As with shooting sports, aviation is populated with special interest groups and mostly men older than 45. There are several publication which are free at the airports. If I want home delivery I pay for a "subscription" or I head to the airport and pick up a copy or however many I want. The Atlantic Flyer, The Pacific Flyer, and General Aviation are three I can think of off the top of my head.

There are several other publications I can grab for free at the grocery store and outdoor sports shops and the local convenience store. The Parent's Paper, Vermont Sports Today, and Granite States Sports are a few I can think of.

These publications are free to the store or venue that give up shelf space to distribute the paper. They base the advertising rates on number of pieces printed and venues they are distributed through. I'm not certain of the number of clubs and gun shops in the US but let's pick 50,000 just for discussion. If 25% carry "Steel Chickens Quarterly" we have 12,500 outlets. The freebie pack is 20 copies we have 240,000 impressions. A hefty distribution in the publishing world. I know the Atlantic Flyer prints 80,000 copies each month and is a small newspaper complete with features, columnists, a calendar and want ads. The thing is also filled with ads which support the paper. In all mags the article are well written and the authors get paid.

These publications also have a website that supports the print and is another venue for advertisers. These publications have been in existence for several years and bring traffic to the stores and clubs where they are distributed.

Best part is I can read them in the car while waiting at the Park and Ride, on the bus, under the light of a head lamp while camping, etc. The free distribution is a model that can work. I save the things for reference and have made purchases from the distributing stores because I was there to pick up a copy of X. Those of you on the east coast should head to the local airport and grab a copy of some of these freebies and check them out.

Not ready to start the SCQ and am tossing this out trying to keep the discussion going.

What's the status. It appears they took our money and now they are going out of business???

hey all,

well from what i have been told, the owner of SCN will be refunding everyone's subscription - at least that is what i was told.

as for the future of the magazine, it could get purchased by another company or individual, but i don't know of anything at this time.

i have moved over to precision shooting, and will be writing for them.

i havn't forgotten about this group here, so just hang tight and we will get some ink for this website and the sport as well.
