Re: 6.5
Sorry Evelio. The new 1712 is awesome. I had a chance to put about about three boxes of ammo through it before Uncle Sam sent me out of town.Evelio Mc Donald wrote:Hey Hoser

6.5 grendal
The Grendel was created to try to sell the the US military as a replacement for the 223 in standard ar bodies about 5 years ago. A few high power shooters here in Texas looked at it and I do not think it offered much in that game.
The Grendel as I recall was designed as the largest cart base that would work with a "modified" ar bolt.
I would think the br would be the better case but both would seem light for silhouette. That said depending on the range, I am having good luck with 6mm.

Guys,
Just to set the record straight, here is the history of the small case-capacity 6.5's I started developing in 97 based on the Lapua 6mm BR case. The first was the 6.5TKS (Theodore-Kurreck Silhouette.) Tim Kurreck paid for 1/2 of the reamer. I designed it for the 139 and 108 Lapua Scenars. A year later I had a 6.5TKS Improved reamer ground by Dave Kiff at Pacific Precision. Tony Tello also had the same reamer made a year or so later. He called the cartridge the Viking. The Dasher is also a copy of the original 6.5 TKS Imp reamer. A 1.75" long version of the TKS was made in 1999, which was call the USC, for Ultra Silhouette Cartridge. It is based on Lapua 243 brass.
The TKS loads used for years are:
35.0 VVO-N150 + 139 Scenar (Moly-coated) = 2,775 fps
29.5 VVO -N133 + 108 Scenar (Moly-coated) = 2,750 fps
Before the TKS was designed, I was shooting a 7mm DST, based on the 6mmPPC Lapua case. It launched the 180 grain JLK to 2,300 fps which will knock rams silly. The case shoulder was blow forward to 45 degrees and the case body-taper reduced to 2.5 degrees per side. The bullet is longer than the case; a really odd little round, but devastating to rams. Funny thing, the first time I brought it to a match at SLO, a know-it-all gunsmith dismissed the round as way to weak to work on rams. He sure did eat his words.
For my money the 7mm BR is right up there with the 6.5TKS. Jared Perry's 7mmBR is chambered with my reamer design. I wrote about it several years ago on the old Grey Beard site. An 8 or 8.5 twist is the way to go to launch the 175 MK's at rams.
For all of the small case-capacity 6.5's VV0-150 is by far the best powder for the 140-grain class VLD's. For the short line launching the 107's or 108's nothing beats VV0-133. For a single powder for both loads, N140, VarGet or RL-15 all work the same and will produce excellent accuracy with both heavy (about 75 to 100 fps less than N150 before the pressure is excessive) and light 6.5mm bullets. H4350 will also produce excellent accuracy with the heavy bullets, but it is too slow to attain max MV in the smaller 6.5's. In the 6.5 IMSHA case or similar it works very well.
Cheers,
Dan Theodore

Thank you, Dan for your posting. Your remarks on Greybeard had me thinking about the 7BR and possibly a 7IHMSA as a start in High Power. However Pete tempted me with a 6.5-250, a.k.a. 260 Bobcat barreled action.
No regrets but after jumping into the 6.5 boat and then learning about the 6.5x47Lapua and the 6.5 Creedmoor I was interested in what people were thinking and doing. Your remarks have interested me in trying VV-150 and possibly H4350.
Looking forward to anything you have to say.

With the 6.5 USC (UltraSilhouetteCartridge), about half-way between the 6.5TKS and 260 in case capacity: 39.0 grains of VVO-N150 produced 2,750 fps with the 144 Lapua and excellent accuracy and ram performance. I had 5K of those old 144's. They were quite "smashing" on rams. Tello had Lapua make a special run of those, but the new ones were softer, based on smash-testing done against samples of the original version. I never tested the H4350SC in the USC case, but I'm sure it would work very well. I do, however, use it in my 6.5-284 and 284 long-range prone rifles. It is most excellent in those rounds.
Cheers,
Dan Theodore
