Thread protector on hunter rifle

Post by Varn »

The rules state the barrel must taper from breech to muzzle. If the barrel is threaded for a brake, suppressor etc most people will run a tread protector. I can get a thread protector that is a smaller diameter than the end of the barrel where the threads start. But these thread protectors are not tapered over their 3/4 inch length. I am wondering if this would be an issue at your respective matches. I have asked my friend who is a match director and he didn't feel it would be a problem. What is the general consensus on a thread protector for on a hunter rifle? Thank you.

I can't imagine that you would have any issue at a club match and probably no issue at a state/regional match either.

Now, if the "thread protector" was a big-honking weight that was much larger than the barrel then yeah, you'll have a problem.

You never know though... you could run into one of "those guys" that just have to enforce every tiny little rule to the Nth degree no matter how insignificant the situation or circumstances.

=:)

Allen,
I can't imagine either. I spoke with the match Director at Ridgway.. he didn't see an issue either. But I thought to eliminate any issues I'll just have it put in the lathe and tapered 10 thou from front to rear. One less thing to think about. Thank you for the input.

If anyone would throw a fit over a standard diameter thread protector, shall be "stoned" with said protector! That is the most ridiculous point to make and protest! Some people may only have 1 Hunter gun and want to use it for other disciplines where attachments are legal. For instance, screwing a suppressor on and using for PRS.

Butch (Professional thread protector thrower) 🤣🤣🤣
