Would anyone have pictures of their home shooting ranges? I would appreciate ideas on backstops and stands, as we are looking to move back home to the farm and I would like to eventually build our own practice area.

At the missoula range we just use a mountain as a backstop. Don't suppose you have one of those handy?

Here is one of the Ben Avery range in Phoenix. Not my home range, but one I liked a lot. Pneumatic target reset was nice.

The backstop is just dirt filled totes and freezers. It's stacked two high these days, but I don't have an updated picture other than the one with the wooden wall. We're eventually going to put some shelving on the wall so that we can banks of targets instead of just the swingers in the center.

Here is a picture of the SB range at Fort Steele. The part the animals sit on is a RR rail, looking at the bottom. Pads were welded to the rail head benind. PeEll.s stands are about the same except the rail head is down and the pads are welded to the bottom of the rail which is on top.

I have some five foot sections of 1/4" x 4" plate steel that came off some sort of old rake that I was planning on using to set the animals on, I just don't have a good idea of how to build legs that would be both portable and stable. Railroad iron would be nice! Not sure where to get that, or even what one fellow listed as channel iron.

One question for those that use piles of earth as berms, what sort of composition do you prefer? I was thinking of purchasing a truckload of chert and piling it between crossties, but this seems a little overkill for a rimfire only set up. What do you suggest?

Cannot resist for those of you that have shot at BRI this is a current picture.

Okay this is my personal back yard range. RR Iron in ground with foot size perches welded on back stops dirt covered about 6" 5/16 with fines stays in place good and easy to handle. Held in place with RR ties. Animals are spaced at or more than min. NRA specs . It only allowed me 3 pics have many more I can load if it helps you and somewhere on here I have put some pics before .

Ldholton, your set up is about what I had in mind. I have a pile of cross ties to use as a form, and wanted to put some earth as a berm. Thanks for the pics!

Still not sure how to make legs for the rail, but am getting closer.

I tried a few types of rail before used RR track , and if you hit the rail animals would fall as often as not , with the "planted " RR track not an animal has fallen due to a rail hit since I built them (like 3 or 4 years ago )

Many ranges use old, worn out grader blade edges. The county should have a huge pile of them.

That might actually be what I have. They are about five inches wide, 1/4" or slightly thicker, and roughly 5 feet long. I bought some property that was covered up in old farm machinery and assumed they were from farming, but there was at least one dozer blade in the mix so it could be anything.

Funny thing about farming, those two loads of scrap were the only profit I have ever made at it!
