Has anyone tried a 300 blackout on big bore rams ? The ballistics with a heavy bullet would probably make it a marginal silhouette round, but low recoil is where I want to go if I try big bore silhouette.

You can throw a rock with just about the same trajectory as the .300 Blackout. Not suited for anything approaching the distances we shoot....

So you've shot one at big bore rams ?

Thats what i was thinking the drop must be very great at that distance.....

I think the drop with a 165 grain bullet looks to be about 10 feet...but the energy remaining looks to be enough to drop a ram. I was just looking at one of the rifles and it seems like a very low recoil round.

Nope Glen... I have shot one along with several of the of the same general ilk trying to find something that would work and make Major power factor to shoot in 3 Gun competitions. With a 150 pill If your zero is for 200 you would dial ~+27 min to be on at 550. At 550 your bullet would be around 1200 fps and I would not feel at all comfortable with that pushing a ram off the rail. I guess if you put the right mount on for your scope you would be able to dial that much in to work with most scopes but it is kind of like using a mortar at any ranges over a couple of hundred yards......

Just my .02 and just because I don't see it as viable does not mean it to be true...

I did a little quick research and a 168 SMK in a 300 Blackout will generally be loaded with a muzzle velocity of 1600 to 1800 fps. Using the 1800 figure you will have at 500 meters 1134 fps and 480 ft/lbs of energy. There is your BIG problem. It takes a minimum of 1100 ft/lbs of energy to consistently knock down rams at 500 meters. You'd be much better off with a 6.5 or 7mm TCU.
Personally I shoot standard calibers, 260 and 7-08 and load down for C,P,T, and use a full house load for the rams. Works for me, and I don't have to mess with making cases ect. My powder for the reduced loads is IMR SR 4759. I've been using it for 20 years or more. I also use it in my 30-30. Do I need to explain how that has worked out for me?

Thanks Al...I have started using 4759 in my 30-30 and love it . I think I'll probably follow your lead and buy either a 708 or 308 and down load . I still think the 300 would be a fun little round to plink with.

Just did a side by side with a 223 case. The blackout is approx. 60% of the 223. 25 years ago some were trying the 30 tcu. Like you say a nice plinker but really lacked on rams. There has always been a problem with 168 mk 30 cal bullets on rams, accurate enough but not built for shooting steel. Some think the angle they hit the target is part of the problem with the bullet coming apart as it hits the animal and not using the energy to push the target down. It seemed if you switched to a hunting bullet your accuracy really fell off with the slow velocity. I would even shy away from the 308 unless you have one and want to shoot it. If you are going to buy something look to the 708 or 260 with a large choice of cases to use.

lets remember what the 300 blackout is popular for.

1) 220 grain bullets and a can.
2) See #1 and hogs
3) 175 at 1800 for major in short distance 3gun.

If you try to shoot 200+ well just a bit rainbowed for the 3gun matches. Stick with 223 or move to 308.....

Just to be different, I would not agree with Yankee, or A, go with 260 or 6.5x47. 7-08 is a good round but dated. As I have pointed out before, look at the numbers of 7mm shooters as compared to 6.5 at nationals. There is a reason.
