Lyman 20MJT (front sight) usage ?

Hello,

Currently have a 39A with Lyman 17A front sight. Works well. Only thing is I'd like to let more light in the front sight, hence a larger globe. I'm also looking at a Rossi R92 to shoot PC at my club.

Has anybody tried the Lyman 20MJT (or a variant that is not as tall)? It's a 7/8" globe and will let in more light. Interested in trials/errors of others.

Feedback appreciated.

Chuck

Makes me wonder why Lyman doesn't make the 20MJT into a 3/4" globe? Did some searching and not many people using that globe. Doesn't anyone else find the 17A awfully small?

Chuck Lyman's 17 series is their traditional size, in production 100 plus years. 20 series take Anschutz size inserts, bit larger. In between are Redfields, May make the rule.

Not sure larger is going to make any difference though. Personally I don't want light on my front post & control light with the rear arpeture. Merit adjustable is the most important part of my outfit.

Boats,

In smallbore I have the common (standard?) setup: Marlin 39A, Lyman 17A front with Shaver inserts, Lyman rear with Merit adjustable. Scored me a 36/40 this past Saturday at the club.

Since I shoot 10M (AP & AR), also club matches using Olympic-sized front sights, there's a little adjustment time with the Marlin (before @ match). Just thinking outside the box and trying to get a setup that is similar across multiple platforms. Also looking at a Rossi 92 for PC-CLA (like I really need another distraction!). Most likely will try it on both platforms.

I have to change gears when switching off from the 10M Air rifle to CLA or my Single Shot Silhouette rifle. 10 Meter mostly use a flat top post and hold bottom of the bull. Silhouettes use a pin head and hold on the spot I want to hit.

Can't say I notice the difference in sight hood size but sure do notice the difference in sight picture bottom of bullseye vs spot on steel Silhouettes, Takes some time to adjust. I avoid the 10 Meter gun until dead of winter when not shooting the others.

See, I'm shooting 10m AR in the fall. It tightens up my game. Not sure what it is, but, there's something I don't like about the 17a.

Back on CLA topic, have to review CLA rules some more.

What I don't like about the 17a is the fat, knurled ring that locks the insert in place. I tape up the threads and chuck the ring into my "lathe" (i.e., drill press) and turn it down to be the same diameter and thickness as the sight tube using a file. I strip the original blue and then rust blue the whole sight and I'm quite happy with it. It's not a Distant Thunder sight but it's the next best thing and cheaper than a case of beer.

Brent I have seen guys mount 17A's backwards so the knurled ring is muzzle end. Sometime ago found a special ring on Ebay that flared out sort of like a funnel. Bought one never saw any difference vs factory You want it let me know.
