I'm going to set up my own practice range for small bore silhouette and I'm concerned about the back stopping. What is the maximum departure angle of a .22 LR round that catches the edge of a target? Is there any idea of what the range fan can be an edge hit? I've been looking for info on this but have come up empty.
I just want to be safe and keep my rounds on our property.

There are too many variables but if it's a issue I'd say the metal target needs to be contained with in the stop and the stop needs to have sides. I have seen chickens edge hit and they travel 90* to the
flight of the round. If it's a swinger or loose target it's almost impodible to get a ricochet less then 90*.

I saw a picture of one (irish range I believe) where the animals sat back in a bunker with a roof, and a piece of carpet hung right behind the animals to catch them so they didn't fly into the trap. I'll see if I can find it again, if you need full bullet stopping this would do it.

We have three ranges we use here with berms anywhere from a couple of feet to a couple of yards behind the targets. It is not unusual to see an edge hit deflect feet from its original direction of travel.

So................... the real solution to your problem is to shoot paper animals. It is much better practice but not as much fun as seeing the animals fly.

My buddy says Big Fork has a nice setup with walls to take care of the ricochets. The walls are made out of railroad ties. Here is a picture.

This is what I have set up. It was my intention to have a trap made to accommodate this. I have a lot of trees on my property, behind targets is about a thirty foot rise. I also, would like to keep all rounds on my side of the fence, as I'm sure my neighbors vote Dem.. I don't cot-tel to them, nor am I interested in giving them a purpose. I have a lot of pine logs, I may build up some around my impact area, just to be safe. I don't know how much space you have. The animals I used are from Quality Targets. Really good folks. They are scaled to shoot all varmints at 40 meters. They have many to chose from at reasonable prices. The swingers save a lot of set up time. I had all material on hand, except rod to hang them from. $10.00 ground rod from HD. Walk out back door, set up by bench rest on carport, turn on fan, fire away.

Is that as in Bigfork MT? I love the Great Northwest. FL is flat and claustrophobic.

Yeah its Bigfork MT on the beautiful Flathead Lake. I'm from Missoula, we have an excellent range here too. Come on up for one of our matches this summer, we allow camping right between the smallbore and big bore sil ranges!

Are they going to start shooting at BF again? Back when, there were 2 state SB matches there. Beautiful range.

I'll ask my friend next time I see him, but I have no idea if BF is going to shoot sil again.
