Anschutz legal??????
Hi all. I was wondering if anyone could help me out before I place an order for a new rifle. I am looking to pick up an anschutz 1416 D HB. The heavy barrel model. I want to use it to shoot in NRA silhoette matches and I was wondering if anyone knew if it is legal in the small bore hunting class. I read somewhere that the barrel cannot be a bull barrel but there isn't really anything form the description of the rifle that says it is a bull barrel. Does anyone know if I can use this rifle in the hunting rifle class as long as I stay under 8.5lbs??????

It's a technicality, but does the barrel taper? Rules call for a barrel smaller at the muzzle than at the receiver.

Again technically it is a different diameter at the receiver then it is at the muzzle. As seen in the picture.

I think the issue comes into play w e looking at the rules. It says no heavy "bull barrels" or varnmit barrels. I feel like they should publish a list of production rifles that are considered acceptiable in each class.

Looking at that picture I don't see any taper. The rule just says it has to taper from the receiver tot he end, if it does than its legal, if it doesn't than it isn't. There are plenty of custom barrels shooting hunter that are thicker than a normal barrel, but they taper and are allowed. Thats my 2 cents.

Ya that was my take on it as well. There is a drop from the receiver into the main part of the barrel but once it gets to that dia it is a flat contour to the muzzle. The only reason that this matters is that the guy I am trying to order it from can only get the HB model in. None of his dealers have the D KL model. This sucks.

(3.1.1.e) Barrel: A hunting style contoured barrel that tapers from chamber to muzzle. Bull barrels are not permitted. A factory tuner that does not act as a muzzle brake or compensator is permitted. Maximum barrel length is 26 inches, including tuner. (See Rule 3.16.1).

The rule only says the barrel must taper, so if the barrel tapers quickly from the receiver to the barrel it may be at the discretion of the match director.

FWIW my 1416 barrel does taper and is legal for both classes. Mallory's first Anschutz.

What model is it? The heavy barrel or the D KL???

Sorry, not marked on the barrel or action, but the barrel has an almost imperceptible taper from the chamber area to the muzzle.

This is so confusing. I may just try to call someone at the NRA. They may not know but at least if I get to talk to someone who may have a definitive answer. I mean they did make the rules right.

They may know the rules without knowing the rifle. There was a similar debate about the CZ 452 Varmint, and that rifle ended up being legal. Yes, the barrel was heavier than a typical hunting rifle but there was a definite taper from receiver to muzzle. (Note that the new CZ 455 Varmint barrel has no taper.)

Also, even if the NRA says it should be legal, every match director can make a different determination. If you know where you are going to shoot why not ask the director there? That would probably be safest.

That presents another issue as the club I was thinking about joining has a "this should be fun not work" point of view. From my understanding they are not going to stick to the rules very much just provide a place to shoot and have a good time. Nothing wrong with that at all. Actually looking forward to it but if I want to go to an event then I want to make sure I can compete in the class that I am set up for. If I am going to shoot the higher (or 10.5lb class) then I will buy equipment that will serve me well beyond my ability in order to shoot, enjoy and eventually be competitive (if I put the time in) in that class. If I was going to start in that class I would start with a different setup. It is hard for me to spend 2500$ two times. Lol.

The 1416 HB does a bigger area in front of the receiver at about .850 dia. for about 2" long and then a short taper to .750 for the rest of the length of the barrel. In my opinion it is legal for hunter class. Mine is under 8 1/2 lbs. even with the beavertail fore end.
