Well Hi every one new silo shooter here.

I have just started shooting SB 1/5th matches, my first shoot i borrowd my friends 1712 annie and shot terrible but learned alot doing it and had fun next time im taking my own gun a 73' remington 540x that had the barrel set back 2" and had a win 52 chamber cut triggers been to a gun smith breaks at a 1lb and its still in the original 3p stock with the adjustable but plate, would this be a suitable rifle in standard class? im mostly concerned about the bulky 3p stock

To be legal the rifle has to weigh less than 10 pounds two ounces with the scope. It also has to fit in a jig for dimensions, but I imagine it would fit. Generally the jig only occurs at a state or national championship, so you may never see a jig. The buttplate has to be secured to match the contour of the stock. Anyway it sounds good for a start. If you shoot a season, you will probably buy a 1712 anyway.

Welcome to the game! I think ter has given some solid advice. And I think both your Remington and Winchester will be more than accurate enough. My first piece of advice is to just bring whatever you have and let the game be fun. As you gain experience, you will want to experiment and make changes. This is normal. But it is good technique, rather than good equipment which wins matches. Example: The last local match I attended was won by a guy shooting a stock Ruger 10/22 (his score was 55/80, and sometimes he shoots better). The second piece of advice I offer is to practice. Dry fire about 20 minutes each day, and go to the range once a week.

thanks for the answers and tips. My rem weighs 8.5 with nothing on it so i should be able to make weigh.

I have adjusted my but plate for length, height, and made shure that it didnt go under the line of the stock i had one master class shooter at the range check it and he said it would be legal for a shoot. As for dry firing i cant use empty brass because my chamber is so tight it gets stuck in there and the same with snap caps they need to be knocked out with a cleaninng rod

If you use brass from rounds that were fired in that rifle's chamber there shouldn't be any problems for 3-4 snaps. Rotate to get "fresh" brass under the firing pin. After several snaps you may find that your extractors are lining up with a previously made firing pin indentation and aren't snapping fully over the rim, thus causing your extractor to slip off the case.

The brass i was atempting to dry fire with was shot out of my savage mk2 witch is a larger chamber than the win 52, also cleaned it out using a Q-tip and solvent there was a few lead shavings in it. Easily extracts spent brass now

Im working on posistion and my hold that works the best and am comfortable with. Going to a match tomoro hope fully do better than last time

Go for the fun, stay for the expensive toys To give you another idea of shooter versus rifle we all had our backsides handed to us last week by a 14 y/o girl shooting a CZ452. Granted it had a trigger job and a Boyd's stock but still it managed to out shoot all of us with 1712 and 54.18s. She shot a 34 in Std and 32 in Hunter. Her first master scores. She is really coming along quickly. I want to say she took 2nd at the 4H Nationals this past year as well.

So go have fun and shoot as many rifles others own as you can till you decide if you want or need to upgrade. Seems like you need two things to succeed in this game. Lots of practice and no real life to worry about. Things middle aged men don't have time to do much of is practice but they have lots to worry them

yeah theres a girl that shot last time using a old BSA mk2 with peep sights out shot most of the other kids there.

Well i did ok today shot 2 points higher than before 27 total. My dad took his 452 ultra lux and shot a 17 total with open sights, and his friend thats is into BR shooting shot my gun and did a 20 both thier first time ever.

We all were shooting cci standard velocity and almost once every bank there would be an extreme flyer, on rams i was bank 8 and broke the shot cleanly right over the target (holding over for distance) and my shot hit in the middle of bank 7. This happned numerus times in the cz and rem they always either went extreme left or dropped strait down a few feet

Is that 27 out of 40 or 60?

Man, that's a great score!!! 27 out of 40!!!
I've been shooting for a few YEARS now and have yet to break 25!!
I know I'm not the standard by which all should be measured, but just trying to get better myself all along.
