I have an old Rem 40x short action repeater that was formerly used for an NRA HP (across the course, paper bullseye targets). Since I have not fired the Rem since I started shooting aT2K for that game and have recently discovered silhouette (I am addicted), I was thinking of building a HP hunter gun on this action but am not sure how much it weighs since it has a heavy barrel on it now. Does anyone know how much this action weighs without a trigger?

I am ultimately trying to figure out what taper and length of barrel (planning on using a .260 Rem) could be used and still make weight. I guess I am looking for a good compromise between the thickness (and therefore stiffness) of the barrel and length (don't want to compromise my velocity with a barrel that is shorter than necessary).

I have a walnut Treebone Pharr RT/S on order (was originally going to use this for a SB build but found a Robertson for that one) - will I be able to use that stock for this HP rifle or will it be too heavy?

If you decide to use the Treebone stock, you need to go with a no.4 contour barrel, or a no.5 fluted barrel, finish lenght not over 24" and will require one of the new Weaver or Leupold scopes that weight around 16-17 ounces, and also use Talley"s one piece bases. Lead time for this barrels is about 3 months. The 40x repeater action is a great choice.

When I read your response initially, I thought you meant the Talley bases with integral rings (can't tell how much they weigh but are apparently light) but then discovered that they also make a pic rail with 20 MOA built in so now I am not sure...

Haha! That is a good way to burn out a barrel in one weekend! Snake runs a FAST match. No time for barrels to cool down with him around!

The Talley rings are the ones that are one piece, ring and base are integrated, they are very light, You dont need the 20 minute full lenght base.
By the way, your stock will be going to Hydroprint in the morning.

Thanks! I just ordered a set...and a barrel (Lilja had one in stock). I just got my scope yesterday for the Anschutz - guess I am gonna need another one for the HP gun (ouch!). Great news on the stock - can't wait to try it out!

You know you might want to look at medium Palma tapers...I have the shoulder lengthened and have them finished off at no more than 26".
Memo to Trent: I run a fast match because in the immortal words of Duco in "The Good, the Bad and The Ugly" ..."When its time to shoot...SHOOT..don't talk". ;) If this heat doesn't break I'll be forced to slow down...that'll make for really long day
Barrels wear out...heat is only part of the equation...friction is the really culprit. Crucible steel is born of very high temps....short of warping temps like in machine guns ...bolt guns are pretty safe...unless you go prairie doggin' with some of my friends

Holy crap, 107 F in St. Louis today? I will tell Oneil to pull his ram loads apart and dump out some powder like he had to 10 years ago in Phoenix. He was blowing primers big time that hot day. Less than a month to go for your HP regional.

Thanks Snake - I used medium Palma taper on my across the course rifles but figured they would be way to heavy to make hunter weight (especially with a walnut stock). I will do some more studying on it before I build another one but I already received a #4 taper from Lilja for this one so I am going to go with that on this build.

Yo McAlice and KID....I ordered cooler weather for you faint of heart. Kid, the medium palma cut to 24" and fluted and drilling out the buttstock will get you to weight. If you want to shoot the regional I'll let you shoot what you got...but if its illegal then no awards for you Reminds me of the HP shooter i let use his 15lb over the course rifle...although a distinguished master...the A class beat him. He comes around now and again looking for redemption but alas, it hasn't come
