.44 Mag

Curious how many may be shooting the 44 mag in CLA and what your experience has been. I used my Marlin 1894CB 24" in both CLA and PC several years ago (using 2 different loads), then just for PC, when I picked up a 30-30 and 35 Rem. I'm now thinking of making it my go to CLA gun, since I have 2 other PC guns. I'm using 240gr lead bullet with 21.0 gr of IMR 4227 and have occasionally rung a ram.

Looks like I'm unique - only guy shooting a 44. Love the time it takes between the trigger squeeze and clang on the rams

Our club shoots regulation small bore and pistol caliber CLA. Due to our high power silhouette range configuration we can't shoot regulation Rifle caliber CLA.

Instead we shoot a 40 shot 200 yard Ram match, with a cast bullet only rule. 38/55 is almost always the top round. 45/70 2nd. While not allowed in our match I shoot it pratice with my 30/30 & jacketed bullets can't shoot higher scores than with the 38/55. Guys do shoot the big bore pistol calibers 45 LC and 44 Mag but have never done well. Seems to me at 200 yards it's working against the grain to use a pistol caliber rifle. Nothing wrong with doing something different and you may find it works well.

G'day All.
Some blokes down-under have good success using 7 to 8 gr of Trailboss and cast lead bullets for the 200m rams.

I've used mine with 10 grains of Unique and a 200 gr. cast bullet at about 1400 fps.Its 130 clicks on the Williams FPTK from the chickens to the rams.Only one ram I hit in the neck did not fall.At one range I shoot at I have no trouble with rams if the wind is from the south. If it's from the north I don't shoot that gun because the wind is holding the rams up.My 44/40 is a little more acurate but the same performance.

I sometimes use my 24" .44 mag for PC. Although my score wasn't anything to brag about I used it last evening. My best bank was the chickens and I got 9, eight of which went over the berm after being hit. That's what I like about the 44, action after the shot. I shoot cast bullets exclusively and my 44 load is the Lyman 215 gr. SWC and 20 gr. of IMR 4227. I've never tried it on the CLA targets but if I did I would load a heavier projectile.

It was the "action" with PC targets that made me go to .357 and 25-20. 200 gr lead with 8.5 gr of unique was beating up the animals. Love the gun that's why I want to use it for CLA, which I don't shoot too often or too seriously

I use my 92 Rossi with a 20 inch barrel for PC at Seattle Rifle&Pistol club.9 grains of Unique with 180 gr.JSP works for me.It shoots more of a pattern than a group, but I have hit more targets(29) with this gun in a match than other guns-go figure!
