I've been shooting iron sights, and I can shoot well with them, but I think it's time to upgrade to a peep sight for all three of my cowboy silhouette guns.

Does anyone have a preference for a receiver sight like a Lyman 66 or a tang sight like a Marbles or Lyman #2? I understand the pros/cons of having the sight closer to the eye with a tang and the receiver sight being on the stronger part of the gun and offering better hand position, etc. I just don't have much experience with either and would like to know if one type is clearly better than the other for this game. If they are all the same, I'd rather have a receiver-mounted sight but I'll choose a tang sight if it is better performance-wise.

If it matters, the sights will be put on a Marlin 39A .22 with a 24-inch round barrel, a Marlin 1894 .357 with a 24-inch octagon barrel and a Marlin 336 .30-30 with a 24-inch octagon barrel.

I like the receiver mounted sights on all my marlins. My Winchester has a tang sight, but it has better hand placement for me than a tang sight on a marlin.

I've tried both and keep going back to Williams reciever mounted sites, probably because theyre what I used 1st. I do have one gun with a tang that I'll be experimenting with later on to see if I can adapt to using a tang.

What you want is repeatability and easy accurate adjustment as you change critters. Personally I don't trust any of them until proven, easy way to prove your sight is clamp a dial indicator on the receiver then measure the clicks as it runs up and down. Have checked a number of Lyman 66's for guys at our club and they repeat well. Friend of mine uses Williams, same thing the go up and down like they are supposed to coming back to the same spot. I go all Lyman 66 so I don't make mistakes moving from one rifle to the other. I grew up on Lyman 48's so know which way they click without thinking about it.

The new Lyman 66's can go wrong though, not made out of very good material. Or so it seems to me. Run one down to the bottom stop screw the arm bends and sight continues down when you think it's stopped. I take the stop screw out and use the scale to read zero. Old Lyman 48's and Redfields made out of steel work very well if you can find one.

Only new made Tangs I trust are the precision vernier equipped models from Small American Shops like MVA or Baldwin. Vernier's always adjust correct as long as the shooter uses them properly. I can't recommend new Lyman or Marbles barrel adjustment tang sights. I hear MVA's barrel adjustment copy or the Marbles is as good as old stock Marbles. But have no personal experience with it.

I have a marble on my 39a and lymans on my 336 and 1894, by placing the apeture closer to your eye it increases the sight plane, field of view, makes it easier to focus on the front sight and target, and is easier to deal with varied lighting conditions. the marble is perfectly repeatable and for the lymans I measure the elevation of the sight post with a machinists rule. That's what I have and it works great for me but if I were buying sights for these rifles again I would put marble sights on all 3 mainly because of the click adjustment and windage.
