Would a Remington 541-S make a good Hunter class rifle?

I have seen several at the local match as long as you can make weight with your scope combination I think you will do well with it.

Steve, they work fine, have one and know of several others. Tend to be a bit pricey with the plastic magazines but they were popular in the 90's.

This is easy YES
They would even make weight in the old days with a bit of work.
If the magazines give you trouble just put a bit of electircal tape around them.
Triggers are adjustable and most of them shot great.

I wouldn't use one especially as the collector value has skyrocketed, they are to light for most full grown adults with the exception of petite women. I had a S model, now have a T, I like to keep it around in case a small statured person wants to try silhouette or my when lower back gets tweeked and can't handle the 1712 for 80 shots. They've been selling for 700+ on gunbroker, that's crazy money for that gun.

I have a gorgeous 541-T with Leupold 6.5-40 EFR on it that has had a bunch of work done by Brian Voelker. I thought having a 541-S would make for a nice pair of accurate and collectable rifles. I like "accumulating" firearms that I enjoy using as well as having them appreciate in their value. I really don't believe in buy it and stuff it away and never shoot it. That isn't why they were made...... I have the same feeling towards cars and motorcycles, Safe Queens and Trailer Queens never made sense to me. While I can get a CZ 452 or others for less, they just don't have the same appeal to me. Don't want to put out the cash for a Anschutz, Winchester 52 (I do have a Win M75), or Remington 40X quite yet.

If anyone has any suggestions other than the 541S Let me Know I am always wiling to consider others!

Neither the 541-T or especially the early S models quality can be seriously questioned, I just wouldn't shoot a 541-S because of the collector value. In a way I'm glad that mine has been accurized like yours Steve making it a moot point whether or not I shoot it because it is a fun little rifle. Oddly enough were talking about this, I had shoulder surgery a couple of weeks ago and probably going to have to shoot the 541-T in the first few matches until I get some arm strength back.

I love the class and looks of an older gun. The quality of the wood and workmanship are so much better than most of what is available today unless one spends a great deal of money on an Anschutz or like rifles...... IF there are any other rifles out there that are even close to the Annies.......

Was the WOW regarding the price a shock at how high or what a good value it is at that number?

Steve, I'm not sure what to think about that price other than I wish I still had the two heavy barrel 541-T's, a sporter 541-T and a 541-S that I sold back in my gunsafe. The Wow was mostly for the wood on that gun, there used to be a guy that shot silhouette around here that had left handed 541 with wood that was incredible, be interesting to see what it would bring on gunbroker. In as much as I appreciate 541's it's hard to get really excited about them because my wife and I both have Anschutz's and 40X's. I just bought her a vintage 54 sporter for her birthday, a "safe queen" from the early 80's, it's pretty fabulous in every respect, looks, feel and accuracy.
I'm not sure any 541's are a "good deal" or good value at 700.00.

Hey Kevinbear, what kind of work did you have done on your shoulder?
I had a total joint replacement on the left side done 3 weeks ago.
Final got my courage up to lift a 7 lb rifle today and while I am stiff I think it's going to work ok.

Mary OUT BACK GUN PARTS,INC. are making metal clips for the 541 Rem. www.outbackgunparts.con 812-945-0480. They are very good to deal with and fast shipping. I have shot a 541S since 1980 and it does very well. It will shoot tighter groups off the bench then Luke's Anschutz Sporter.

I'm supposedly on the list for those metal magazines when they actually start producing and shipping them. I haven't heard from them yet, though.

For a cheap target quality rifle take a look at the 581S, same barrel and action as the 541S..It doesn't have the checkering or the higher quality stock but and has a non adustable trigger. The trigger can be lightened considerably by using a ball point pen spring.The lock time is one of the fastest of all 22's and is nearly as fast as the Kleinguenther K-22's. I had one that I used in Silhouette in the mid 80's and it would keep up with the Annies any day of the week. This particular rifle would hold a 1" group at 100 METERS using CCI SV ALL day long. It disappeared when my ex and I went separate ways..Recently bought one in excelent shape off the NRA auction site for get this.......$140.00 plus shipping that I am customising the stock and other features on and haven't even shot it yet..Am I worried about its accuracy?? Not one itty bitty bit. They are notoriously accurate and that is why the market price has gone through the roof. Why pay $1000 + for a great shooter when you can get the same results with a $200 to $600 rifle? As the word leaked out about their accuracy the prices have really moved up and when one comes to auction it sells immediately.
Get a 581S, you will NOT be disappointed.
