Does anyone here know off hand how much it is to camp at Raton for the week of nationals. Went to the web site and no info till the first of feb. Thinking about going if I can get the time from work and looking to keep it cheap. Thanks guys/gals

There are probably going to be several of us going from WA, Matt. With the increase in fees for competitor housing, I'm definitely looking around for camping or hotel options.

When you say camp, just what do you mean? You can camp with a trailer, camp at the primitave campsites, and I know of some that have slept in the parking lot at the SB range. The price range for thoes options run from about $30 to $0.

Something to think about, bring a gun large enough for close encounters of the furry kind. There can be night time visitors.

Especially when someone leaves a large cooler full of steaks outside in the night.

Well Baby Huey in short YES. And they are not shy about eating over 70 pounds of meat in a very large cooler. There are a few from El Paso that can back up this story, along with a few from AZ that were there the next day at the camp site.

While it looks like the fees have gone up for the competitors cabins and founders, I think the new fees are for the room for the night, not the individual bed as before.

There is a primative camp for tents and small trailers like popups. There is water at a couple hydrants in the area. Semi portable plastic rooms. Showers available at the main RV area, a couple miles away, along with washers and dryers.
If you have nerer camped in the wild where there are large hungry critters, remember. Nothing in your tent except you and sleeping gear. No toothpaste, gum. candy, food, perfume, soap, candles, nothing. EXCEPT a couple clean pots and pans to bang together if you should get a visitor. Your food and such stays in your vehicle both day and night. If it is a wet year the critters will stay in the hills, If it is dry they wander down looking for food any food. I have sat in the camp and watched bears, lions, foxes, coyotes, turkeys, deer and elk, even a phesant all wander through. If they got a bit close I just stood up and told them to move on. Kind of a fun place. There is a state park a couple miles NE of Raton that has camping but you have the same critters there.

Denver's just up the road.

Yes there are some big bears over in Raton...heed the advise do not bring the munchies in with you to the tent or trailor or you will be Spam in a can....lol

Yep, that includes powdered drink mixes. One of the NRAWC locals tells me that cool-aid, gatoraid, and the other powders are like crack cocaine to a bear, even in a sealed container or packet!

...and the critters like the buildings. One of the Founders Cabins was visited the night before we moved in, a couple of years ago.
Ask R. Massey about his late night visit with the cub in a trash dumpster, quite funny.
