Last summer Luke Johnson shot a perfect score 40/40 with his Smallbore Hunting Rifle while competing at the pre-nationlas warmup match at Ridgway Rifle Club. Unfortunatly it did not qualify to be recorded in the national record books but a great acheivement non the less.

I never did understand that. We paid for the match at an NRA approved club at the NRA Nationals and it's not a sanctioned match? Luke was great that day and I don't even think he realizes what he did.

Congratulations Luke. The difference I believe is "approved" vs "registered". Not a National record but how many earn their Grand Slam pin in one match??? Merry Christmas to all Roger

As long as the people in charge of the match turn in the paper work to the NRA Silhouette Department and give a copy to Luke there is no reason he would not get it but I am sure Luke already has his Grand Slam pins since has been shooting great scores for years.

It sounds like a slap in the face from the NRA to me. If he paid his entry fee, had his score entered in an official NRA scorebook, how is this not a recognized perfect score (national record)?

I have been watching the NRA digital competive shooting mag and I haven't seen anything about silhouette anything nats, or one write up did I miss it somewhere?

17.5 Courses of Fire for which National Records are recognized -
Note: Records in all forms of Silhouette competition. except Long Run Records (see Rule 17.5.1), are
established only in Registered Tournaments which are sanctioned by NRA. in order to be recognized by NRA.
scores must be fired at the full distances specified. The scores may be fired at either the full stated metric
distances or at the alternate English distances (yards). provided that proportionately sized targets are used; and
must be submitted to NRA by the Statistical Officer of the Tournament in which they were fired after being certified
by the Jury. National Record Reporting Forms are mailed to sponsors of NRA sanctioned Registered Tournaments
by NRA Headquarters.

This from the NRA rule book, available online in pdf format. National records can only be established in "Registered" matches, not "Approved" matches. The match Luke shot his 40 in was an Approved match, which is normal for that type of match. The match was intended to be a "qualifier" for those that did not have a score in their book so they would not have to shoot in the Master class in the Nationals, and as a practice match for those who wanted to do so. This does not mean that the Ridgeway club did anything wrong, the NRA did anything wrong and It doesn't take anything away from Luke, who am very fond of and count both him and his Pap as good friends. They are class people, great shooters and the 40 is what it is, as fine as an example of shooting that you are likely to see anywhere.
