I have found (locally) a Remington 541-T with a Broughton barrel. Trigger and bedding being modified by some guy named Voelker. Being as I know NOTHING about this stuff, would this be a good gun for a beginner like me? It is on the higher end for what I initially wanted to invest, but I also believe that if I want to get out of the sport, this may hold it's value better than a CZ452 model. Not to mention I have a "thing" for Remington, my first .22 being given to me on my 12th birthday was a Remington 514 that I still own.

Now the Hard Part....... What is a fair value for such a rifle that is in what I consider to be in better than average condition?

Some guy named Voelker?! You found a jewel! Broughton makes great barrels and Voelker is the top name in tuned 541's. Look at it this way - the barrel costs $350, depending on the package Voelker costs about $200 and a stock 541-T is what - $350? If you like the rifle, then yes, it will definitely hold value very well.

I've seen Voelker 541's go from about $500 to $800, almost bought one my self! Isn't the the T the heavy barrel one though with 0 taper on the barrel?

A 541-T is more of sporter, while the 541-T HB has a longer barrel with no taper and something of a weight problem for Hunter class. It's a moot point though since the barrel on this rifle has been replaced, something that pushes the value of this rifle to the high side of your price range.

I've considered re-barreling my 541-T HB with a 1712 take-off so it would work as a Hunter, but that almost seems like a sacrilege!

Well, I did it. WIth the comments from this site, along with some specific help from Innocent (Aka Mary) I bought the 541T that I found. It has the Broughton Barrel that is stamped "Voelker 22LR Match Broughton". Has had the extra action screw and trigger job done by Mr. Voelker as well as something being "Cambered", whatever that means. Oh Yea, one thing I neglected to mention it also comes with a mounted Leupold 6.5-20X40 EFR scope.

In anticipation of it's arrival I ordered a sample of Aquila, Wolf, RWS, Lapua and CCI Green Tag ammo so I can what it prefers.

Now all I need to do is figure out what range to zero it at, what ammo it prefers, best way to clean and maintain it, that other gear I need, etc, etc, etc.........

I am sure that I will find all that and more from all the great people on this site.......Thank you again for your help

Steve, That rifle will hold a good group with any ammo at 50 meters, so shoot five or ten round groups at 100 meters, that is where the separtation comes in on the different ammo lots.

Brian Vollker has worked on several 541's for me, I can't say enough good things about the man or his talent on rimfires.

You definitely need to test ammo at 100 yds or meters because that's where the accuracy matters

That 541-T Voelker Match should prove to be a good shooter for you. Especially with the Broughton barrel. I have a customized 541-X that Brian did for me a few years ago and I've really enjoyed it. I primarily use the gun for benchrest shooting because the stock's just a little too wide to be legal for silhouette. I'm considering buying a 541-T HB stock or maybe a silhouette stock so I can use the rifle for standard class silhouette but I haven't decided which way I want to go yet. I'm looking forward to seeing a pic of the rifle and hearing how it shoots once you receive it.

FWIW, it was mentioned earlier that the 541-T HB had a longer barrel than the 541-T but they were both 24" (same for the 541-S). The 541-T HB had a straight/heavy contour barrel (as mentioned previously) and second action screw where the others had tapered barrels and single action screw.
