I've been lurking here for a week or so and thought I'd join in.

I've been a rimfire nut for 42 of my 49 years since my Pop put a single shot in my hands and took me squirrel hunting. Born and raised in the hills and hollers of the Ozarks in SW Missouri near Branson. Navy Vet, 81-85 and now work as a systems admin. I've had a .22 in some shape or form off and on for 35 years. I now own 3 and they keep reproducing. I have always had a soft spot, (in my head?), for the Ruger 10/22. So I'm in the process of building one for Silhouettes because I found a local private club that hosts a few matches along with some benchrest shooting.

I know the 10/22 is not the first choice for precision shooting, but I've always rooted for the underdog and I just love the plucky little thing. And the amount of modifications that can be done I think it can work fairly well. Plus it will force me to hone my skills to a very fine edge.

Anyway, I'm glad to be here and hope I can contribute in some positive way.

Here is a suggestion for your first 10-22.

Throw the bbl band away.
Glass bed the rear end of the action and at the mounting screw.
Float the bbl.
Have the trigger reworked and replace the firing pin with a titanium pin.
Find a scope with target knobs that has 1/4 minute clicks and not over 24x.
Get some decent target ammo.

Go out and shoot the thing as a "hunter gun". It should give you about 1 1/4" groups at 100m which is good enough to get you into AAA. You might want to upgrade when you think you can work your way into master class.

I have about $180 without the scope into my 10-22 and it shoots great. It cost that much because I bought one with a plywood stock.

I've got a ER Shaw 18" SS Bull barrel on the way, along with a Boyds Tacticool stock. I'm a knuckle dragger so the factory stock is WAYYYYY too short.
Bolt and trigger group going out tomorrow for working over.
Buffer, barrel block and bolt handle coming in too.

The only undecided part is the scope and mount. I've got a 3-9x50 thats going to sit in until I can make up my mind on glass. But I've got some time to work with, the first practice match isn't until Jan.

But my new Remmy 597 is bone stock, so it will most likely get the Hunter class.

BadK...nothing like a few flip-flops to add some length to a stock until you are sure how long you want it.
I've seen some modified 1022s do well, but then the shooter could shoot anything!

Funny you should mention RFC. I've been a member over there for 8 years.
The bolt is going to Que. I've heard a lot of recommendations about his work on several boards.

And David at Brimstone is getting the trigger group, I've shot one of his Tier 2 groups and liked it a lot.
(And trying to work a trade for a poly housing too)

Is there anything that Flip Flops can't do?

I flyfish and have used plugs from flip flops for the bodies on some bass and bluegill flies.

BadK...well they don't work too well in the cactus country of the SW US...but they do make a cheap fast way to determine how long to make the stock and are quite usuable in a crunch at a match.
Do you tie your own flies? A few of us on this forum have feathers from assorted fowl.

Yeah, I've been tying my own flies for some time now. I have a ton of flies, it's just that when I get the itch to go fishing, either the waters too high or too low or it's too DANG COLD!!!!!! But I do love to go chasing 'gills with little foam spiders!

She doesn't get to indulge in the great pleasure of home raised fowl this evening. Maybe next time. I'm going to introduce her to the flock. She needs to take some eggs home to raise. Just kidding Daddy from Texas. I will bring full size ones on my next trip. Would hate for y'all to have to wait for them to hatch.

Going to have some great hackle and saddle feathers in all kinds of colors if someone needs them for flies. Just let me know.

jjp, I was trying to learn to tye soft hackles a few years ago and finally got it and went on a tying binge and filled 3 boxes. A year later I discovered that bluegill LOVE them. But I'll let you know when I need some.

If you have put a little more into your gun than I suggested, don't let that stop you from doing the glass bed and bbl floating. Don't forget to glass bed the back end of the receiver that goes into the butt of the stock. You do need 2 good anchor points for a bedding job.

That's on the "To Do" list.

I saw one of the guys on RFC do a rear screw anchor horizontally into the rear of the receiver through the stock. Was kinda toying with that idea a bit. But maybe later.
