Hey fellas, I'm currently getting ready to dive off the deep end and do a complete custom rifle. Just wondering what type of custom stocks have already been done as I want my gun to be one of a kind. If you dont mind please post pictures of your rifles aswell for me. I know a thread like this has been done 1,000 times but the last one I found about half the photos where gone since they were on photobucket. All post and pictures would be greatly appriciated . Show me those BLING rifles!

Pretty much everything has been tried at one time or the other. But here are a couple of mine.

54-18 Anschutz with Lilja barrel and Pharr RT/s stock.

1712 Anschutz factory barreled action with two stage trigger and Pharr RT stock

Remington 40x with Lilja fluted barrel and Pharr RT/s maple stock

Remington 40x with Lilja barrel and Brown Precision Silhouette stock

Briley 10-22 hunter with Walther barrel and Richards stock.

Winchester 52B with Richards stock

Just some thoughts, maybe a pic or two later....I've handled a bunch of customs, as has most that post here...my concept of a heavy gun, developed in concert with and built by Steve Boelter, is posted under the topic "Cat Nip"....Hunter gun, or dual purpose gun build, if cost is no object, would be on an Anschutz 54 action. A single shot would be preferred, no magazines to keep up with and the bottom is solid, making the action potentially less likely to flex. I see no disadvantage in loading the rifle one at a time, in fact I like adding that to the shot sequence as it forces you to reset instead of just racking the bolt. Anschutz action because it is proven and I feel that they have the best trigger in the game. Second choice would be a CMP 40X barreled action. Throw away the barrel and start with the action. Barrel, you can pick your builder, all premium barrel makers make really good barrels with an ocassional "oops" in the mix. Get an "oops" and they will make it right. Notice I said "premium" barrel makers. Just turning out mass produced barrels does not make you a barrel maker. Bolt knob is important. Get a big one. Feels good in your hand, spreads out the pressure needed to open and close the action over a wider area. You are going to "shake hands" with this rifel a lot, so it should feel good doing so at the end of a long 3 day match such as the nationals. Bottom metal you can get from Mark Pharr....Others make it I'm sure, but Mark comes to mind because his in reasonably priced and he, being a silhouette shooter, understands what goes into a rifle and how bottom metal affects the way you grip the rifle....Stock, I favor the Pharr RTS...Steve Wooster has a good pattern....Whichever stock you buy, consider how the gun will fit....It's more than LOP...the right stock will integrate into your stance and you will shoot better scores and be less tired late in the match....handle as many variations as you can, get someone to work with you to build the correct stance and hold for your body shape...think hard, because the stock is where the gun meets the shooter.....Now the hard part...put all this into the hands of a gunsmith that shoots silhouette and understands all the things mentioned above about fit, hold, etc....or if you are an expert in the field yourself find a smith that understands that an accurate rifle is built of quality components and that they all have to be assembled with super close tolerances and the rifle must be assembled in a manner that lines the bullet in the chamber perfectly concentric with the bore and the bolt has to be lined up and locked up perfectly in line with that bore/bullet that sits in a chamber that is cut exactly square to the bore and all has to be bedded correctly into the stock that yor chose in order for you to have repeatable results when you pull the trigger....Simple, huh....good luck in your build and have fun and keep us posted.

On Paul Freeman's rifles....I consider Paul a great friend and I love him and his family to death...but how that a man who is blessed with a beautiful wife and a beautiful and talented daughter should also have a collection of rifles that makes you drool just seems somehow unfair....he must be blessed cause he's done his pennance here hauling Evelio around the country and sharing rooms with him ....Karma, that's what it is......Paul, which ones are you bringing to Winnboro?

Unfortunately I could bring them all and still not be able to shoot. The doctor has me taking some time off from shooting off hand due to a problem with my right hip. Since I cannot shoot I doubt I will make the trip to Winnsboro this year. I am doing everything in my power to regain my health and hope to be back at it full strength in a couple of months. The doctor says my hips are out of alignment and pinching a nerve so that when I shift my weight while shooting it aggravates the problem. If I do not take some time off it will not get better. It would be hard for me to come and not shoot, all though I would love to see all my friends.

That is my 52B that I purchased as a basket case 15 years ago for $125. It had the unfinished stock and all the small parts were in a cigar box. I had to have the barrel turned and shortened due to pitting but the bore was perfect. It's 70+ year old barrel shoots as well as anything I have. The biggest expense in the gun was the Canjar trigger that took 2-1/2 years to get. Most likely one of the last they made. The next match I attend that you will be at I will bring it along.

Now for that picture....well sounds as though I need to make a trip to shoot even a local match just to play with that toy. Beautiful!

Not coming to Winnsboro because you can't shoot??!!?? Are you CRAZY? I'm going and you've SEEN me shoot. We don't GO there to shoot... we shoot only because we're there and don't want to draw attention. It's 'Rendezvous', Homecoming at Farber College, a gathering of the tribes... I know of people last year that were signed up and still didn't shoot. Ask DuckGumbeaux... And if you don't come, WHO is going to take responsibility for Mojito? Why, that's just plain irresponsible. You know he won't come to anyone else's call... what if he gets out in the road?

A very wise man once told me that having different equipment than everyone else is usually more of a bad thing than it is a good thing. Stick with a known action like Anschutz and there really aren't many options that haven't been done before. By the nature of things Silhouette guys are tinkerers and for the most part all the guys cycle through equipment and have tried it all, that is just the nature of the game. So, again, there isn't much that you could do that hasn't been done. With a Standard rifle you would have more room to play around but, having a standard rifle means you gotta have two

First Id like to say I allowed them to give me the boot. But in all seriousness I already now the action I plain on using, that being a 1712 action. But in reality, as fast as I shoot, a single shot may actually benefit me. But I'm not quite ready to think it will make me shoot better. Also, Is the RT Split stock the best for a guy that tends to always be shoving the bottom nub of the but stock in his shoulder(currently using a CZ Silhouette)? Would that stock resolve that problem most likely? And other than the cool look of a shiny silver lilja barrel, does it really shoot better than a brand new Anschutz barrel? Thanks for the support and I will defiantly keep you guys update. And Bob your 54.18 has the exact same stock I was looking at, and I have to say I do like it. Nice rifle.
