I was looking through a new remington catalog and noticed they have a model 547 in .22RF but have never seen one any where and most dealers have never heard of one. They show two models, one is a heavy barreled varmint which looks like it would not make weight and the other is a standard which looks like it would make weight. The catalog does not give any stats on the gun as far as weight goes. Is it a special order rifle and are they any good for silhouette?

The 547 is a 504 in polished blue with a Shilen barrel and assembled by the Remington Custom shop. It will make weight for Hunter class and should shoot very well.

None, Mary. Remington fixed the 504 problems I knew of (notably the barrel and bolt handle) and field reports on the 547 have been excellent. What I don't know is how well one would hold up long term under the kind of use most of us give a rifle.

Can any gun we use put up the the abuse we put them through!

AD9..my current shooter remake 52 survived 67000+ rounds before needing some tlc. My original 52B, I haven't shot in a few years (only makes standard weight) but it is still accurate...shot it for 11 years in prone/position and 18 years silhouette. ANd it was used by my junior coach in her college years at Colorado...and lets say she is a more than 3/4's of a century old.

Lets hope some of our "modern" guns can hold up as well as the old world ones do.

To nobody's surprise, I'd enjoy trying a 547 just to see how well it held up.

There are several ways a 504 can go wrong, and most of those are fixed in the 547. My remaining complaint is that the 547 still clamps the barrel to the receiver instead of using a threaded or press fit, but the factory guarantees - and reputedly delivers - sub-moa accuracy using a Shilen barrel so there's no reason to mess with it. The only modification I'd make is to have it pillar bedded.

259...BC would never put any rifle through the paces I run one through...but then he doesn't have as much fun either....and eat at as many different ranges.

You would think they would have used a threaded reciever. Even ruger has swithed to a treaded reciever on the 77/22
