I bought a Marlin 1895,.45-70,that didn't have a front sight.I want to put a Lyman 17A front aperature sight on it.Are there two different front ramp bases that were put on them?The web site mentions a old style and a new style! Mine has .100 screw spacing.Anybody had this problem.? Thanks Binski

You're looking for the front sight ramp, right? Shouldn't be too hard to find. Are you sure that's the right spacing? A tenth of an inch seems mighty close together.

I have a 1970 444 that has the old style. The screws are close together,one under the front sight blade,the other in front of the front sight blade. The newer ones I have are much farther apart.One screw under the front sight blade and the other about 3/4 inch to the rear of the front sight blade.The XLR I have has the screws 1 inch apart.I'm guessing you have the old style,because the screws on the 444 are about the same as you describe yours.The 39A I have has the same spacing as the 444,it's from 1980. Jason,your right,to old and up to late.It is 1 inch.The ramp is what I need.Then I'll put a aperature sight on it. Thanks binski

I would just call up the Marlin parts department at 1-800-544-8892 and tell them that you need the front sight ramp and screws. With the serial number and the screw spacing, they'd set you right up.

Or order a ramp from Brownells lot easier than trying to fit something up.

However I find 17A's on top of ramps, even the lowest 17A, gives me too high a head position for the rifles comb height. It's way up there unsupported.

Mine with Ramps are carrying Skinners blade cut down to the height I need to zero with a low rear sight. I use 17A's on barrels that are dovetailed. Not hard to get a gunsmith to cut a dovetail if you need one. Apertures are great but If you are going to shoot Registered NRA Silhouette matches have to use a post so might as well go with Skinners & a ramp that fits your screw holes and save the trip to the gunsmith.
