Don't know who all the gun smith's are on this site, so if you are what barrel would you recommend for a 1710? I have heard krieger,shilen, lilja, hart mostly from shooters. Are there good reasons besides " who is sponsoring who?" Thanks in advance. Don't mean to leave anyone else out who has extended experience with different barrels.

I have a Schneider barrel on my 40X small bore Standard silhouette rifle and a Lilja on my Hunter class rifle. They both shoot better than I can.

I'd recommend a Lilja tightbore 4-groove. That's what I put on my 1712 not long ago and it shoots amazingly well.

Ive got a buddy who has a lilja on a 1712 and it will group under an inch at 100meters.

go with either a Lilja or Shilen. Lilja on my 1712 for hunter and Shilen on my Match 54 for standard. both shoot under a minute at 100 meters with the right ammo at the right velocity. now if the guy behind the rifle could shoot a under a minute at 100 meters

shakes, when you say they will shoot under an inch, is that at 100m. or 100yrds.? also how many shots per group? and if you were to shoot 10 consecutive groups 5 or 10shots, how many do you think would go under 1inch? sorry for all the questions but a base line lets us know apples to apples. thanks ps what ammo and are they tight chamber or not?

Sure.. 5-shot groups of .6 to .8 inches center-to-center with one flyer out of 15 shots with one lot of Eley Target Rifle (actually in Remington Target Rifle box). With Lapua Center-X, I got .85 and .93 groups center-to-center for five shot groups. Groups with Lapua Midas, the groups were no better than Center-X. I haven't had any higher-end Eley on hand at the same time as I had no wind for testing. Note that these group counts are not high enough to draw firm conclusions, but I did buy a case of the Remington Target Rifle and compete with it. Tests were at 100 meters.

thanks Jason, that is exactly the type of response I was looking for. I have had buddies say their rifle shoots half inch groups only to find out that was one group out of about 25, with the rest being between an inch and an inch and a half. ouch!

Shilen or Lilja are great barrels. You couldn't go wrong with either one.

Do you have a comparison on say a 1712 with the stock barrel for comparison?
Another words is there a performance advantage on a 1712 by changing from the stock barrel to a Lilja or Shilen barrel?
Just curious.

100 meters, 5 shot groups, all within the orange dot the match director sticks on the cardboard, the dots are one inch diameter, tight bore, and Eley Tenex with a velocity of 1062 printed on box.

Lilja has to be the best barrel made if the prone guys are using them. All though I have heard a lot of guys the shoot benchrest go with shillen. GO FIGURE!!!

Quite frankly, Alan, the quality of Anschutz barrels is on a par with Dan Lilja's, Shilen's or the other barrel makers' and are of no lesser quality than the barrels found in their high dollar international and Olympic grade rifles. I would at a minimum test the precision of the present 1710 barrel before spending any money on replacing it with something that might only give you a marginal improvement. After all, you can have the best barrel money can buy, but if it does not like the ammo you feed it, you will still not be satisfied. Just my $0.02.

Also keep in mind that there are other things to consider than just accuracy. The Lilja barrel on my 1712 is a bit more accurate, but the biggest reason I switched it is to get as much weight out as far in front of me as I could. The rifle was built from the ground up with all parts as light as possible (Pharr RTS stock, lightweight bottom metal and rings, etc.) so I could put all that weight into the barrel. It's very barrel heavy, which is what I like. It's not what everyone likes, though.
