Problem and Solution.

One of our local silhouette brothers came to me with a problem he was having with his Anschutz .22 not ejecting brass properly. This was an older model with a different shape of an ejector groove cut on the bolt. There was not much case head available for the ejector to engage, the groove shape did not match up with the shape of the ejector. Switching bolts gave reliable ejection. He attempted to correct the condition with a Dremel tool and an abraisive cut off wheel but quickly realized this was not the right approach. He asked me to put the same groove on the older bolt as the newer one.

I measured his newer bolt groove and cut the same one in the older bolt. The ejector is the same for both I'm told. Thirty minutes of prep and machining time was all it took to complete. Little evidence remains of the Dremel work. On the final .001 finish pass the tool broke into the extractor cross hole. No big deal. I took some photos of the work I did this morning before my shift started.

I am waiting to hear back to see if this cured the ejection problem. The pictures got loaded backwards again.....%&@**%$!! photobucket.

Thanks Bob for the milling of the ejector groove on the Anschutz 1422. This Anschutz has been a safe queen for the last 12 years, only being shot once every 1or 2 years. The rifle has always had the problems with poor ejection, it never bothered the previous owner who used it only for hunting. I installed the bolt and tested the ejection last night, it ejects the shells perfectly every time.

Damn that McAlice is good.... to bad he doesn't shoot a 6.5 and that would make him a perfect Guru (Be nice JB)

BobMcAlice, Not to be a smart ass but isn't it the extractor that gets the shell out of the chamber and the ejector that finally sperates the shell from the bolt. Or.. are the terms used interchangeable? Again, only asking the question.

ppkny, your assumption is correct. The extractors are the twin opposing hooks that grab the rim and pull the case free from the chamber. The ejector is a fixed position metal tab inside the action that rides in the bolt groove. At a certain distance when the bolt is withdrawn the face of the ejector strikes the exposed brass of the case and forces it to pivot off the right side hook and fly free of the bolt face. The two terms are different , each has its own function.

Bob:

Thanks for the great pictures and description as well as the further explanation of the process of ejection and extraction. However, in the future, I encourage you to use the proper scientific terms for these actions. That is, the process of extracting is know as "extractulation" and the process of ejecting is know as "ejectulation." In suspect using the proper terms will win you even more followers in the future. BTW are you going to be at CRC this Sunday?

Hey Jim, thanks for correcting me on the proper terminology on Daves ejectulation problem. I guess if he were to have any ejectulation problems better to have a partial or incomplete ejectulation condition. Imagine if he had a premature ejectulation problem. This could have led to a .....rupture.

Trent, you got your mind in the gutter again. I meant a ruptured .22 brass case. These things go bang in your face, you get peppered with powder kernels and possibly a flake of brass. You got to be careful if you got a premature ejectulation problem. Wear safety glasses when shooting your loads.

It seems like team Colorado will be writing a book on PE.

Don't group me in with all these old guys! I can control my ejectulation just fine! These old guys don't get to ejectulate very often in their later years. McAlice being a master machinist can make/modify all sorts of toys to help him control ejectulation. The worst thing though is all his old buddies asking him to help them with their ejectulation. That's just wrong.

TRENT !!!......  Your killin me.

What are you doing screwing around on the internet? You got a stock that needs finishing, now get to it ! And who you calling an old guy?? :o

Stock is good to go except for chopping off a 1/2" of the butt and fitting a buttpad. If I run the chop saw this late at night I won't get any ejectulation going on for some time.

So I am loading 7-08 ammo for AZ instead. ;)

Those AZ guys ought to be a little worried about Team Colorado. I hope Bonner and his little 6.5 doesn't make an ass out of us. :))

Lets not lose sight of the fact that while the maladies discussed above are serious, there are two issues that are much more serious. Those would be re-loads shooting blanks and being hopelessly overweight. I don't think even Bob McAlice in his prodigious and extensive bag of tricks has any solutions to these problems.

Trent, please be careful when you chop off a 1/2" of your butt and fit your buttpad!!!!!!
