As usual we are going to my Dad and Step-mom's House about an hour and 45 minute drive away for Thanksgiving. Son Joel and I started thinking. Grandpa's backyard kind of looks like a Silhouette Range with 90 plus acres and a large berm looking hill in the far back. We have Smallbore animals but Grandpa has no rails. Quickly we cut some 1/2 inch rebar 24 inches long, ground one end to a point and welded a short section of 1/4 inch flat bar on the other end to make temporary drive in the ground stands to hold the animals. Has any one else done this sort of thing when visiting relatives during the Holidays instead of playing touch football, basketball or any of that "normal stuff" that the average American does in their yard after the Thanksgiving meal?

We have most holidays at my in-laws, as my parents are 2000+ miles away. If the inlaws had enough room to make a silhouette range, I'd be there shooting every weekend, not just on holidays. As it is, we take out the pellet guns and shoot cans and targets several weekends a year out at their place. If you have the opportunity, you'd be crazy not to set up a silhouette range there and get the whole family involved in it.

It is an illness. I've been wondering if the rest of the gang was going to show at the range for practice Thursday afternoon...

I'm thinking of coming out and shooting a little Thursday afternoon. My girls are going with their husbands to their families, son is on duty in Little Rock, quiet day. If no wind then going to play with torque settings on the 54:18.

Bob, we're not crazy. Now as for the rest of the world, that's another matter. Got to get some shooting in today, tomorrow got to say home and watch our Razorbacks kick the stuffin out of Duckgumbos LSU Tiggers.....

Yes that will work. I used to shoot at a place that did something similar. They had 1/2 inch pvc pipe in the ground and put the rod into the pipe. On the rod was welded a piece of flat stock the size of an animals foot. We have also wired 2x4's to steel fence posts and shot the targets off that.

We got beat by a better team, and got outcoached to boot. LSU is very impressive, quarterback is hoss. Was a good game to watch, we had two runing backs over 100 yards each and had opportunities to win. Hog Quarterback should have been yanked in the 3rd period in favor of Mitch Mustain, who is a much better passer. McFadden was the best athlete on the field and Coach Nutt didn't let him touch the ball in the last series??? There is a big controversy between Nutt and the new Offensive Co-ordinator (that he was forced to hired by the AD, a good move on my part). I think Nutt took the offense out of Malzan's (offensive co-ordinator) hands bound to do it "his way".

And the defense that Reggie Herring called was so predictable that I knew what it would take to move the ball. If I knew, you know LSU knew.
Herring insists on staying with the man press instead of going to a zone. The slant is there all day long against the man press. Maybe we're not smart enough to play zone?
Hats off to LSU, they did a good job. We'll be in the same boat against Fla if we don't establish any kind of consistant passig game.

The Thanksgiving visit and temporary backyard range set up worked well. My Dad's Backyard faces North so the Sun was at our back the whole time. My brother in law turned up with a borrowed Rifle with a Weaver T36 on it(I guess he did a little research on our game). My son realized how blessed he was that he began shooting in competition at an early age. He noticed that the relatives who never shot in competition are lacking something in the Rifle Handling Department that seasoned Silhouette Shooters possess. Of course, the Ray Schafer targets performed at their usual peak of efficiency and toughness. The general consensus among the menfolk was: "Can you bring this stuff back at Christmas?". My statement was you need to buy a rifle that will function, get on the road, and join us at some matchs. Ray Schafer, I am going to have to contact the folks at Piedmont Gun Club to learn exactly how they set up this pedestal type permanent system. It looks very vibration free. I have a feeling that our club will try something like this after our rails are chewed up by Centerfire Shooters since our range has to be multi-purpose.
