New member and new to silhouette shooting. I want to start shooting silhouette small bore. I have a Sightron 6-24x42 dot scope. Am I screwing up getting a CZ 455?

Not at all. The 455 is their new model which is replacing the 452. Most shoots that you go to there will be many shooting the 452 American and the 452 Silhouette. They are proven competitive shooters. Some have their doubts if the 455 will shoot as well as the 452's. But time will tell, there are not that many of them out there right now. If you find the ammo that your gun likes, put a trigger kit in it, I am sure that it will shoot better than most people can shoot. The thing is get in there and have a good time. My son JJP took a CZ452 to a shoot in October because his rifles were being re-stocked. He refused to shoot my 1712. I won the "B" hunter class, and he was the Overall Hunter class winner with a CZ. That shows you that these rifles only will shoot as good as the person shooting them. Whether they are a $450 rifle or a $2000 rifle. You will do fine with the 455. If you ever want to shoot another model or brand just ask, most everyone would be happy to loan you one to shoot. Its all about having fun.

Maybe. It will probably be accurate enough. But do some checking around on the 455's trigger. Is it adjustable? Can it be easily modified like the 452's. What is the availability of Timney replacement trigger as its the best bet for a competitive trigger?

I hope not I just bought a CZ and Im waiting for it to arrive anyday now. I think you will be fine and have alot of fun with a CZ, and besides everybody with some experience on this forum recommends them. So how could you be screwing up. I wonder if the 455 will be the one to get because of the ease to change out the barrel, and that has huge aftermarket target barrel potential I would think. How much time will it take to get aftermarket parts for the 455? Who knows but there's a 455 on the classifieds now with a timney trigger in it so they must be working on something.

CZ 455 accuracy is comparable to the 452, so expect 1.5-2 MOA at 100 yards with the right ammunition. Timney is waiting for more 455's to hit the market before going into production on a trigger; they had my 455 most of the summer as a test mule for a modified 452 trigger (that's my 455 in the classifieds), so they know how to build them but right now mine is probably the only one that exists. Lilja also has a 455 for testing, so expect something there, too, in time.

After-market trigger kits, like the Yo-Dave kit, designed for the 452 will work in the 455 since the triggers are almost identical. After market sears will not work.

Including me,there have been four shooters that I personally know that have used a CZ 452 to shoot their way into AAA class. The gun is capable and the money saved on buying one pays for the ammo it will take to get you the trigger time to develop your skills and fall in love with this sport. When you reach that point, which took me about 3 seasons, your upgrade to a more custom built gun is not seen as that big of an expense as you have probably already been saving up for your custom Anschutz. It's not like you are going to be spending $2000+ on a gun you might not use. You will be at the point where you are shooting a case of ammo a year. Cost per hour of enjoyment of my silhouette rifles, especially the smallbore rifle, is very low as compared to all my previous hobbies, especially hunting and fishing.

Consider buying a used 452 from a shooter that is upgrading to something else. I was the third owner of the CZ I had. It had already been tweaked by the previous owners when I got it, so I did not have to do anything but shoot. I sold it for what I paid for it to another new shooters in our group to get his feet wet with. Post an ad to see what might be available.

I plan to use one next year to win the Nationals so that should tell you something Just kidding of course. But I can say you will not be disappointed with the CZ. I used the 452 Sil model for a couple of years before coughing up the $$$$ for a custom 1712 and it took it me AAA as Jeaux mentioned. Mine would shoot under a inch and a half at 100m. For the money they are going to be very hard to beat. Most would probably tell you that the accuracy of the rifle is not the reason they moved up to a Annie but rather they wanted a better trigger. We shoot alot of airgun here as well and all my air rifles have really nice 2 stage triggers which was making it a little more challenging when going back and forth to the CZ with a single stage. When I sold it to a young lady I only lost around $50 so for over 2 years of use not bad, more like a rental Oh and just so you know that same rifle in a teen girls hands has whooped me and my custom 1712 on more than one occasion since she got it!

Thanks for all the info and encouragement. I have read so much about the 452 and so little about the 455 that I really did not know which way to go. I can not afford an Anschultz right now though I'm told that if I stay with silhouette I will probably end up with one. I have found a place to buy a new 455 American for about $ 360 shipped. All of the 452 Americans I've seen are well over $425. I live in the country so I have a "country" range set up where I practice. I look forward to shooting with people that know what they are doing and learning from them. I'm a old "f-rt" who likes to pull the trigger.

There have been a number of used 452 models for sale on RimfireCentral over the last few weeks. You can probably find a decent rifle that you can sell or trade later in $300-ish range.

Over the years I've owned and used Win 52, Anschutz 64 & 54 series, Rem 40XR & 540 series bolt action rimfires for indoor comp, sil, hunting and just plinking. The only thing I don't care for on my 452 is that the safety operates in the opposite direction from most other bolt action rimfires I've used... It's nots that big of a deal if you can remember!

It also needed some work on the trigger but that's not unusual for most rimfires and easily remedied for this model.

I'm not sure what's been changed for the updated CZ's but I have no plans to get rid of my 452 and wouldn't hesitate to use it for sil if I were to return to that disclipline again.

2011 Match Dates: 16 April, 21 May, 19 June, 16 July, 20 August, 18 September, 29 October (Tennessee State Championship) & 19 November. PLEASE NOTE. Due to scheduling restraints, all monthly matches are not held on the same week-end day (June, September, and October). Check the dates. All matches will be NRA Approved matches with the exception of the State Championship which will be NRA Registered and have its own program.
