CRC to host lever gun silhouette in 2011.

The Colorado Rifle Club will be starting up a lever gun silhouette program beginning in January 2011. Jim Goodnight recently rejoined the club and volunteered to be the match director of this program. Initially he has planned centerfire rifle matches beginning in Jan., but plans on expanding to all three guns as quickly as possible. We have all of the needed targets and the range is all set up ready to go. Currently he has the second Saturday of each month reserved for his matches , eight planned through August, and even a two day State match planned for mid June.

Seven years ago Tom Bant and I held a lever gun silhouette fun match at CRC. We advertised it weeks in advance and got the only day in April the range was available. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a cold, rain-snow mix day and was poorly attended. We had maybe eight diehards out for some fun. It never took off because we could not get anyone to step up and be a match director. Well it looks like that is about to change. We wish Jim good luck and are sure this silhouette game will flourish at CRC.

I plan on attending a few of his matches. I have a reasonably accurate 94/22 XTR and an old tack driving Marlin 336 RC .30-30 that have not been fired in many years.

Great news, Bob. I'll try to get up there for several shoots. Will these matches be NRA approved?

Cimarron, we are a 100% NRA club so you can bet these will be approved matches. Jim is a dedicated lever gun competitor who travels to lots of matches on this side of the country. I am sure his matches will be well run and attended by most of the regular lever gun crowd here in the front range. As an aside, we have an untapped resource of possible new shooters to try out this game. Two years ago CRC "adopted" the Sand Creek Raiders cowboy action shooters. We gave them a permanent home here at CRC and helped them develop their own range on the eastern edge of our 2400 acres. I have spoken to their director , he told me there was interest by quite a few of the Raiders to ply their lever gun skills on metal animal targets.http://www.sandcreekraiders.com/

Thanks, Bob. It's about 170 miles from me, so I'm not likely to be there for all matches. But I'm sure I'll make a few. I know Jim casually from shooting at the Nationals.

I have a new 32-20 that I'm trying to get running. Can you part with some of your best load data? I know you've got a lot of experience with this cartridge in a lever action. I have none.

HI, Glen,

I shoot a plain base cast bullet in my .32-20, the Saeco 322, 118 grainer, and occasionally the Lyman 311008. I find that my gun likes 4.5 to 5.5 grains of Unique or Herco. But the best load is 3.5 grains of Universal Clays. Good luck.

Bob,

I brought my old Win 30-30 back with me when I went to Pe Ell a few weeks ago. Been shooting this old girl for thirty years now! Lots of Oregon deer have met their end to this rifle. She told me that she is ready to kill some steel now.

Does Jim have a schedule or a contact info so that we can be sure a match is happening?

Did he have a match this past Saturday?
