I was shooting my Marlin 1894 44m with Williams rear and firesight front sight at paper 50m & 100m.
The conditions were cloudy & fine rain .
I wear corrective lens and the front sight all bit disappeared when I sighted on the black target .
Could it be a focus problem with my old eyes ?

Your eyes might be ok its just the rest of you that is falling apart. In my many years of shooting with lever guns I have always had to open or close my rear appreture to suit the light conditions and get a sharper image. In the words of 5 Star Frisby "nothing money can't fix"

In the first stages of my decomposition I had the same problem. At a certain point in a match I'd lose focus and the front sight vanished.I went to a very good eye Doc and he asked me to duplicate the match ( without the gun of course) and he started laughing, handed me some eye drops and said "you forgot to blink" . Now if I can just keep my eyes moist , and the light is good I can still shoot ok. Getting older means getting more rest, using a sight I can see and getting to bed early before the match.

Front sight??? you mean you are supposed to see the front sight? Daisy don't worry, the difference between 40 and 42 is that you need glasses at 40, but you break down and admit it at and get them 42. Seriously, get your eyes checked, there are a number of reason that could cause that, and having spent as much time as I have around one that has gone blind temporarily (7 months) and is going through another batlle of potential blindness now it is not fun.

In talking to alot of the top shooters at the nationals it helps to use a wider post, things won't fuzz up as bad, Might try it!

Try using a smaller diameter rear appature. I went to a .050 and it helped my front sight clarity a lot. Al

Merit makes an adjustable rear sight that helps out alot too. Using it with a marbles tang sight also lenthens the sights.

Sorry for bringing up a year old post, but I'm new to the forum and have been reading old posts. It is interesting to see people looking for answers that have been addressed by the Service Rifle shooters.

You are probably suffering from presbiopia, where the lens in your eye is stiffening, so the ciliary muscle that focuses is having difficulty attaining and holding near focus. This is what reading glasses fix, it's just that for shooting, the ideal lens power is different than for reading.

Do you wear glasses for distance vision, and what is the sight radius of your rifle? I can probably recommend a lens that would fix it.

Art thanks for the reply and the Lenses & Apertures post. I haven't done any measurements yet, but now have a bit of an idea of what to look for.
I have worn glasses for distance for years and now have bifocals ( didn't like the progressives ). I also have a scar on the lens of my right ( shooting ) eye. I get by with most things and am even legal to drive with out glasses. At the moment I can see better as sharper with out my glasses so it's time to go off to the Optometrist .

You want to avoid progressive lenses for shooting. Critical to elevation is the ability to determine how tall your front sight is. As it blurs or sharpens in focus, the width of the blur line will make it appear taller or shorter. With progressives, your focus will change as you look through different parts of the lens, so if the glasses move slightly on your face, or if you shift head position, your focus will change, throwing off your elevation.

I will be seeing my quack today . He must miss me as I go to him every 3 months (high blood pressure).
Beta Blockers don't seem help my shooting

Daisy...shooting is a minor thing that Beta Blockers don't seem to help, trust me I have been around a few that use them!!
