Hello, I am new to metallic silhouette and am trying to understand the rules.
The NRA website is almost useless for rules.
This site seems to have the most information:

Looks like you need almost a box stock rifle to compete.
Apparently there is little room for innovation.
Or, is there some unlimited class I have not discovered?
While I agree with a level field as in everyone sails a Sunfish in the regatta, there should be some venue that allows improved equipment to rise to the top.
Am I missing something?

I personally use a box stock rifle, but I have heard of others modifying their rifles, taking advantage of the rules to the Nth degree and also using tacky gaudy colors.

I think what you are looking for is what use to be the open class...you are about 20 years to late !! it was where all the crazy ideas and rifles florished. The standard rifle will allow a bit of fooling around and tweeking. Hunting rifle is just that it must conform to the demensions of a hunting rifle but even here you can play a bit. Look around you will see that there is a lot of creativity in the rifles used. But silhouette is a rifleshooters sport where skill is prized more than unlimited all out stuff that has killed off a lot of the other games.

There are 2 classes of rifles, standard rifle and hunter rifle. The hunter rifle has a lower weight limit and a requirement of a 2 lb trigger. It must look like a hunter rifle without a thumbhole. The standard rifle must not exceed 10 lbs 2 oz and fit into a box that the NRA has. You can use any safe trigger. With that in mind, the rule book may make a little more sense to you.

So, I guess bullpups are out, no?

I would say that bullpups are out.

I can't see a bullpup design being very competitive, but I could be wrong. Bullpup firearms are extremely well suited for what they are designed to do... carry firepower in a small profile. They are great for fast target acquisition, but they are not known for their long range off-hand accuracy. Not to say that they aren't accurate, it's just not what they are designed for.

I didn't realize that thumbholes were out for hunter class. I am kinda new too, glad I read this.

Although, I just put a deposit on a Weatherby XXII the other day so I don't think I have any worries about that one for Hunter class.

Are you dropping out of HP now and going into 22 "sillywett"
What did you have in mind for your rifle?
I'm new at this game also and trying to learn a bit before I make a fool of myself at a match.
Got in on the 40X's at CMP and want to make a short Bbl , light stock to make weight for standard.
Have a Rem model 5 that shoots Wolf as good as the 40X @100 for Hunting rifle.

Ken,
Almost a long story... I am involved in developing an electronic trigger for the 10/22. The ultimate goal is to build a bedding block bullpup to neutralize the 10/22 "droop" thing. So, seems like everyone who is interested in the electronic trigger is shooting silhouette, so I started looking into it.
Still shooting high power and bullseye pistol.
