Was surfing the Shilen site last night. I saw their 'rachet' rifling.

They had pretty limited dicussion on it; ie almost nothing.

What is the published advantages and what is reality?

I believe they only use it in centerfire barrels. It has to do with the angle of the rifling. Not all rifling has 90 degree corners. Some is rounded at the top some rounded at the bottom and some both. The ratchet is leaned one way or the other.
Upon further thinking , which hurts, it has got to be a Texas thing. A ratchet will only go one way and if you are shooting into the wind, which is always blowing in Texas, it would keep the bullet from being blown back down the barrel. I think I heard a story about that happening once down near Houston.

Don't know anything about them (thought they had 3 sets of lands/groves instead of 4) but I do know that I almost bought a 54MS that had been rebarreled with a Shilen Rachet barrel in .22 LR...

Here is a picture of standard rifling on left and 4 groove ratchet on right.

Like everyone else I do not know why or how this is an improvement.
