Has anyone used one of the Model 82's that the CMP sells? Would it be legal in rimfire silhouette matches?

Not in NRA matches. It's 10.75lbs as it sits, so it's overweight for even standard class.

I have one and it is way to heavy for silhouette.

How well does it shoot?

Did Evelio re-contour one of these for Hunter class a while back? Beautiful job that shot well, but it sure looked like a lot of work!

JC, I have known two that ended up having to re-bed the barrels to get them to hold a reasonable group at 50yds, they didn't even bother testing at 100 as the groups were too big at 50, with over twenty versions of ammo. Others I know have had reason groups, but the still had to deal with the weight problem for silhouette, so not all the CMP stuff is great, despite the name on the rifle.

The kimber 82G was ordered by the clinton administration. that may be why they shoot like crap. mine does. The sights are the only thing worth the money.

The Kimber of Oregon rifles ahve a reputation for being very pretty but sometimes having accuracy problems. I guess that applies to the 82Gs as well.

Evelio re-sculped a CMP Kimber for me. He re-shaped the stock and cut a couple of inches off the barrel. It shoots like a house on fire, far better than I do. I purchased mine from CMP a couple of years ago when they sold some give backs from ROTC units. It was a steal at the price but a safe queen so I took it out one day and gave it to Evelio to see if he could make a standard gun out of it and he did a masterful job with it. My experience with this Kimber has been nothing but good but as we all know, there are plenty of variables from rifle to rifle.

If you could post some pics I'd like to see it. Maybe my safe queen could see the light of day again.

I had a 82G. It was very accurate and had a good trigger. I took as much wood off the stock as possible to make as close to a silhouette stock as possible but with a leupold scope was still just over the weight. If you take this on, a guy on Rimfirecentral can bring the trigger down to ounces. I'm sure somebody can either contour or just take a couple inches off the barrel. It might need that at 25". Lately the CMP has been selling "rusty" Kimber 82Gs for $400 when avaible.
