Getting ready to order several different types of ammo to find out what shoots best in my new Weatherby (after I send it back due to a cracked stock). Over 20 yrs ago I shot my old Rem 582 in SB for a season and averaged in the low 20's/40. Hope to improve this time around. May not ever make it to Master class but don't want ammo to hold me back.

Here's my question: what should be the maximum acceptable average group size for 100 yards? The one time I took the Weatherby out I had one 1.5" - 2" group with Remington Target ammo but couldn't be consistent. Did not have any high end ammo but will next time.

Altho the wind tends to blow here in OK, there's a range that's semi-protected and has lead sleds you can rent to shoot off a bench. I have a 6.5x20 Leupold so equipment/shooting conditions shouldn't be a problem.
Would appreciate any comments.

For a box stock rifle you're in line. My goal is 1 MOA, or a little over 1 inch at 100 meters, but I'm not good enough off the bench (or off-hand either, for that matter...) to get full potential from a rifle, so I assume a rifle is capable of more. You have a great set-up!

I'm with the bear. Right at 1 inch with the best ammo. For practice and monthly matches, cheeper ammo must be used with my budget.

1", 1.5" at the most. try wolf, sk match, federal gold medal, and aguila match rifle. federal gold medal and aguila being the most affordable of the 4.

If you shot in the 20's with a 2 MOA gun you'll be quite surprised once you get a .75 MOA (inch at 100yds) gun and ammo combination!

Assuming your group is round, and evenly dispersed, you'd have to hold on the exact center line of a ram to be sure you got a hit! Surely we all get the occasional gift where we shoot one just a little high, but the round ends up at the bottom of our group and just hits the top edge, but the exact opposite happens too. If you get to a 1 innch gun\ammo combo you have doubled the area you can hold on and be sure to get a hit.

For me, 1 inch at 100 yards is the largest I'm OK with. I sepnd too much on gas, guns, time, vacation etc to go shoot to 'settle' for a big group. I have 2 cases of Tenex, different lots, that shoot quite well in all but one of my .22's. Tenex isn't cheap, but the groups, and confidence, are worth it.

Practice ammo can be lower grade, as long as you dont get mentally defeated by the "good call; no hit"shots.
