New 40x!!

Hey guys so I figured I would show you all my first 40x!
I got it without sights and a really sweet Canjar trigger.
Do you guys think the barrel can be re-contoured to properly fit my Pharr Stock and make weight?
Also, does anyone make Kelbly like bases that would make it possible to fit BKL rings on the 40x?
Rgds

It can be recontoured, but depending on the properties of that particular barrel, it may have a detrimental effect....or it may not. From what I've read, it depends on whether or not re-contouring (turning) the barrel brings new stresses into play on the barrel. You may want to consider slugging the bore and seeing if a tight spot exists further back from the muzzle and have it cut and crowned to make weight more manageable. Or...maybe not.

You mean like these?

I believe these are made by Davidson??

Those are it!, I'll google Davidson Bases and see what I can come up with.
So, the main issue is trying to get the rifle to fit in the Pharr stock, cutting it wont make it fit, so .... new barrel?

Evelio has been turning down some Anschutz barrels, I think. He can probably do the same for a 40X barrel.

A buddy turned one (standard weight 40-X) down and fit it to a Sako. He does very well with it.
If you're trying to make Hunting Rifle weight, a new barrel might be the way to go. The one in the photo above has a Hart. I wanted a true medium weight barrel, so I ordered one contoured to approximately .675 at the muzzle.
I'm not 100% on the bases. Maybe someone else can weigh in on the manufacturer.

I had one turned to make weight and it shoots virtually the same groups at 100 yards as it did at full profile.
The only drawback is the holes where the front base for a Unterl style scope with the adjustments in the mounts are on the barrel. The now look like they weren't drilled deep enough. I dont really care, but some mignt.
I'll try to post some pictures later

Leave that beautiful 40X ALONE! PLEASE
It is worth far more as it is that if it is messed with and they are no longer made.
Be happy with it or trade/sell it and get a Anschutz 54 to shoot silhouette with.

George, I have wanted to get a 40x just for the action for awhile now, just haven't done it. In this dream, the barrel and stock are stuck back and the action gets a Shilen or Lilja stainless and a Nesika stock but it's the same principle. A nice 541-T from my locker has just been over hauled with a threaded barrel and second action screw to make more useful to me. Is this a sacrilege or honoring an old war-horse with a new life? I don't collect, so unused or under-used rifles are quickly sold on to new homes.
Collectors preserve important history, I just equally value extending a legacy.

Im with BlauBear, I dont collect either so I try to make them so they get used a lot, in this case I just need to figure out what Im going to do about the barrel and it will be my primary SB rifle. I actually would like to keep the heavy barrel just in case.
Maybe someone on this forum might have a take-off barrel they would be willing to sell for this gun?
Boyd: I googled Davidson bases and it seems like those are it, I'll be ordering some soon, thanks for the pic!

Remlilja, you might look at Shilen for a threaded & chambered 40x barrel. A gunsmith still needs to do the final fitting, but you might want that anyway: They really aren't set up for drop-in replacement. I would want the head space and chamber checked out anyway, and your cost may come out close to the same anyway since contouring a barrel properly is time consuming.

I bought my 40-X back in '04 to make a single shot Hunting Rifle. The ADL stock its wearing is greatly lacking for off-hand shooting and I hope to have a new one made next week.
BTW, the barrel off my first one was fitted to a 581, so I'm still using it. I still have the stock, and have refit it for the ocassional local BR match.

I believe Jerry Stiller is supposed to be making some 40X clones sometime soon.

There may be some other action makers who have plans to make a 40X clone as well, but I do not know for sure.
