I will be participating in my first "real" silhouette match, and unfortunately I dont have a target scope (yet) so I dont really want to be re-setting my zero like you can with target scopes.

so my question is what would be the best zero? turkeys (77) or pigs (50) ?

Custom is to zero on chickens at 40 meters and adjust from there. You might want to develop that habit even if you're using holdover.

Unfortunatly the trijectory of standard velocity 22 ammo is such that holding over is just not worth the effort. It really makes an already challanging game very hard. If your scopes is not the turret type get your trusty dime out and adjust it in and use it that way till you do get the turret type....there really is no other way around it if you wish to be any good at this game.

If you have a reticle with mildots,

then you need to experiment on paper at 40, 60, 77, and 100 mtrs,

by e.g. setting zero for the middle of the pig,

and using a mildot above the reticle centre for chickens,

and then maybe one below for turkeys etc and then Rams two down.
You will only get this by trial and error.

If you have a duplex crosshairs, then do something similar.
Zero for centre of pig.
Chicken aimpoint is top of leg,
and then experiment with using where the thicker blade of the vertical joins the thin, in shooting at a specific point on the turkey and ram.

You need to be aiming at a point on the silhouette, using whatever you can in your scope reticle.

Shooting at green grass or blue sky is not an option !

If you're going to shoot at Haltom City in the DFW metroplex, I'll bring a spare rifle with known zeroes and you can avoid the problem.

Thanks guys, I might be doing some experimenting with zeroes in the next few days. Hopefully I can get it worked out. Would magnification have anything to do with poi? cause I could zoom in and out and use the duplex posts accordingly.

I will shooting at the monthly silo match at the Laredo Rifle and Pistol Club in Laredo. Thanks for the generosity of lending me a rifle though, much appreciated. Would you happen to know of any matches near College Station, TX?

Is the match in Laredo an appoved match or just a fun match. I do not see it on the schedule in Shooting Sports USA. I travel south from Houston at times for work, if it is a regular match I may try and make it one day.

sts, Im pretty sure its just a fun match, just a club thing. Those are a lot of matches, I might try to make it to one in the fall, I'll be in College Station starting in september- for my last year of school. And most of the matches in houston are about 2 hours tops from where I'm at.

the rifle im shooting right now has a bull barrel so it have to be standard class. might be a good reason to get another one?

I make most of the Houston matches and run the one in Friendwood about 45 minute for the Houston range. The range in Austin should only be about 105 miles from College Station. Bring you bull barrel gun, you can shoot both matches. You just would not be up for award for the hunter match. I am sure that I could come up with a hunter gun that you could use, I am down to my last 5 or 6 smallbore hunting rifles.

I had a chance to buy a 22 40X with a BULL barrel on it last weekend. Pretty rifle and I amy still be able to find it if you need another action to build another hunter rifle with.

I think there are a couple of others in the safe plus two or three standard rifles (1-40x and 1-Winchester 52)

If I buy another 40x action I may try and talk Evelio to converting it to a repeater using Anschutz 1712 magazine assembly.

Now Paul, I understand trying to keep the herd under control, but this is another 40x!

Adjusting the AO or power of a 'quality' scope shouldn't affect the POI.
However there are some others that seem to vary with the vari- ,.... if you know what I mean !

You might want to fill in with the colour you are shooting at.

(I have shot at white, black, silver and fluoro red/orange silhouettes at different ranges around the planet).
