I have a 1712 on a fiberglass stock, im considering getting a set of allen head bolts for the action to torque. how do you good folks feel about that? At what tension/weight should i apply, should I, have you noticed a difference if you give a few more lbs to one screw more than the other.?
more importantly, whats a base line weight for this stock? ive heard that the fiberglass doesnt take to kindly to the pressure(it is pillar bedded) sure would hate to crack it.

Is the stock not pillar bedded?? Will make a difference, can't hardly crush pillars, easy to crush fiberglass....Might start at 2.5 nm...Evelio's advice concerning torque is to throw away the torque wrench and just snug it down...and, I have to say, it works on my Evelio built 54:18 Frankenhunter in a Pharr stock....YMMV..

The owner's manual that came with an Anschutz 54-1808 ED I owned at one time stated that the proper torque required for the action screws is approximately 5 nM or approximately 40 lbs.-in. I own a Gehmann torque wrench and did some experimenting with the Anschutz and the Rem 40X, and found the tightest groups with both rifles, using Federal 900B ammo, were produced when I had the torque wrench set at 5 nM.

By the way, I use the wrench to tighten the action screws on my HP rifles (trget and hunting) at 7nM or ~65 lbs.-in.

I bought an Anschutz torque wrench and the instructions suggest starting at 5nm. I have increased to 5.5 nm and my Weatherby with a 64 action is happy there. These folks have the allen head screws:

Great service from them. They have other products as well such as trigger spring sets and rifle grease.

I recomend hand tight with a medium length bit holder, but only if they are pillar bedded. If not pillar bedded, you have to be carefull because the wood or fiberglass will compress.
