I'm in the mood to buy a 1 piece cleaning rod for my 1712 FWT. What do other 1712 owners recommend in terms of length, handle style, etc?

Now you've done it.

I prefer the Patchworm, but most make their own from Weed Eater line. Do me a favor and don't mention brushes.

I won't mention brass brushes, although I might end up trying a nylon brush. I would prefer a 1 pc rod, probably in .20 cal, with a bore guide, a jag, and some patches.

As far as I know, this 1712 has never been cleaned, and it was not new when I bought it. At this point, I'd feel better if I cleaned it with a rod and patches.

I use a Dewey rod and I get the 44" one so I can use it in other rifles as well. I also use a nylon brush only along with patches.

You better clean them if you do not want to have trouble like Jared Perry did at the Nationals this year with the same rifle he used to shoot four 40X40 earlier in the year. He had trouble with accuracy on his third standard rifle match and ended up borrowing a rifle to shoot the Hunting class match.

Tipton carbon fiber rod, anything 40+ inches will do fine for that rifle and others. I haven't used my Dewer or Proshot rods since I got the Tipton carbon one. It doesn't pick up grit like others I've used and seems to rotate a little more smoothly. I use patches and an occasional nylon-bristled brush on my 1712. Make sure to get brass-core and not steel-core brushes, whichever you use. A lot of the bronze/brass brushes have steel cores. I don't let the core of the brush touch the crown when it exits, but having the core be brass instead of steel reduces the risk of even slight damage to the crown should I not hold it as steady as necessary sometime.

There is nothing wrong with them if your goal is to have a clean bore !
