Folks:

I just bought a used 1712, and love it, but it does have one problem:

The extractors do a great job of getting the fired case out of the chamber, but when I pull the bolt back all of the way about one time in five, the fired case bounces around (can't tell off of what) and winds up back in the action.

This happens even if I pull the bolt back fast, if I pull the bolt back slowly, the case stays in the action every time.

The scope mounts are not blocking the ejection port, and I can't figure out why this is happening. Anybody got any ideas?

I know of two reasons for this to happen, and you eliminated one by pulling the bolt back fast.

The other cause is reversing the ejectors: There's a right and left ejector and it's real easy to get them confused. Your right ejector, the one next to the ejection port, should come around to a point, while the inside ejector is rounded. This way both ejectors can grab the round from the chamber but the inside "claw" will release first so the case (ideally) flies out the port. If they're reversed and the sharp claw is on the inside the case will sometimes eject properly, but then it's also real happy to bounce off the scope and fall back into the chamber. Just guess how I know... Some folks get real concerned when I field strip bolts at the range, but hey, ya' gotta do whatcha gotta do...

If that's not it, I dunno... The same thing does happen to me occasionally, but it's usually because I racked the bolt back too gently.

Tip your rifle to the right on ejection. The spent case is bouncing off your scope tube back into the action.

I just fixed one of mine that was misbehaving as you describe.

This is what I found:

If the nose of the extractor is too square, it tends to retain the case too tightly. (Both right and left side 'hooks' are called extractors but, in reality, the right side 'hook' really does the extractor work, the left side is primarily a tensioner.)

In that situation, when you pull the bolt to the rear and the case head contacts the ejector (the small fixed rail with the nose that protrudes from beneath the bolt when it's at its rearmost position) the case is ejected straight up and bounces off the scope.
(Sometimes, it will actually be thrown to the left and bounce off the action sidewall.)

This is what I did to correct it IN MY RIFLE! (If you start digging around in yours, that ball -- and any attendent responsibility -- is completely in YOUR hands! LOL):

I beveled the lower corner of the right extractor nose slightly and my rifle now ejects forward and to the 2 o:clock position very reliably.
(If you overdo this, Neal Stepp carries replacement extractors.)


BTW: Removing the extractor collar and extractors is simple. Replacing them without overextending the collar -- which is a spring that has to apply the proper tension to the extractors -- is sometimes tricky, as the collar tips tend to catch under the extractors and just prying on them with a thin screwdriver is asking for problems. Slip a 6" length of strong fishing line beneath the collar when reinstalling it and you can use that to pull it over the extractors without overdoing it.

There may be other/better solutions but this worked for me.

Thanks for the very useful replies! My bolt does seem to be assembled correctly, with the respective ejectors on the correct sides.

I'm going to follow the first rule of home gunsmithing, and order replacement parts and work on them, so that if I goof them up I will be able to put things back they way they are now.

Take a look at the picture here. While this is a CZ bolt we're dealing with in that thread, the general idea is the same. You'll see one bolt that hasn't been touched, and another that has had the extractor's angles cleaned up.
