Making a Tuner...

i have a .920 dia bloop tube on the end of my 10/22, and now that i have my very own south bend bench top lathe, im gonna make a tuner for it...... what would be a good TPI for the tuner adjustment? What would be a good adjustment range?

i was thinking of machining a sleeve with a .925 ID, threading the outside of the sleeve, and cuting a groove in one end for an o-ring, then ill make another piece with alot of weight that will thread onto the sleeve, and also contact the o- ring, as to prevent adjusment change.

i dnt wanna buy one cuz i have all the bushing stock to do it, besides, it'll be fun

Hard to resist a machining question....a 32 to 48 range would be my choice, try a 40 TPI male and female test part . Not sure what pitch is on available tuners. Maybe Metalhead has some thoughts on this.

well ill try a test 40 TPI test part and determine if i need a shorter pitch or longer pitch and adjust TPI as needed

as a remember....
pitch = The distance from a point on a screw thread to a corresponding point on the next thread measured parallel to the axis.

so 1.000/40=0.02

so the distanve between the top of the thread to the top of the next thread is 2 hundreths of an inch... really really tiny, lol

ill make a test peice and go from there

you are describing a Fudd tuner - uses the same o-ring friction method.

but

you don't need a setup like that. the current trend is to just add threaded weights to the end and not mess with adjusting the tuner in and out.

deadeyeky, You don't mention which gun you are going to use the tuner on. FYI;

3.1 High Power Silhouette Rifle (e) attachments which do not cause any portion of the rifle to exceed the weight or dimensions as listed herein are permitted provided they do not extend past the end of the barrel. Sighting devices are not considered "attachments".

3.1.1 High Power Hunting Silhouette Rifle (e) Barrel: A hunting style tapered barrel. Bull or varmit barrels are not permitted. A factory tuner that does not act as a muzzle break is permitted. Maximum barrel length is 26 inches, including tuner.

3.2 Smallbore Silhouette Rifle - Identical to the description of the High Power Silhouette Rifle, except that the rifle shall be chambered for only factory loaded .22 caliber short, long or long rifle rimfire cartridges. Hot loads, such as "Stingers", are not permitted. See Rule 3.17.

3.2.1 Smallbore Hunting Silhouette Rifle - Identical to the description of the High Power Hunting Silhouette Rifle, except that (a) the rifle may be a single-loading rifle, (b) the weight may not exceed 8 1/2 pounds, (c) the rifle shall be chambered for only factory loaded .22 caliber short, long or long rifle rimfire cartridges, and (d) barrel turners or additional weights are not permitted.

ya thats kinda what i have in mind, but without different types of weights and sequences,

o, this tuner will go on my smallbore standard rifle,

p.s. i didnt kno that factory tuners are accepted in the HP hunter class...

My tuner is threaded at 10 / inch. I have it marked in incriment for one revolution. 2 marks on it takes it from so-so to real good. I don't know if I explained that very well. Very little adjestment on the tuner makes a big difference.

Which is why you want pretty fine threads, so that you can have finer control over it.

Deadeye;

40tpi will give you .025 per rotation of the tuner. If you can scribe the tuner with 25 lines around the perimeter then you have a tuner that you can adjust in .001" increments. This will make your tuner a micrometer.

Have fun and watch the finish on your threads if you want the tuner to move smoothly. I am rebuilding a Colchester Colt lathe so someday I can grow up to be like you.

ok, ill make another test peice, the first i made was with 32TPI

well im off to CA state smallbore match, ill update you all of the match with pics and results, and when i finish the tuner, ill post pics of that also
