I just ordered some steel silhouettes to set up on my home range. The site I ordered them from listed them as 1/5 scale. I assumed that the 1/5 scale was the standard reduced size used in this sport. So....y long awaited targets arrived and OH MY....they are WAY small!!!

The chicken is about the size of an egg (sorry....that's got to be a bit of a pun but that's the first comparison size that came to mind)

The turkey is smaller than the palm of my hand.

The Pig IS the size of the palm of my hand

The Ram is the size of my full hand (heel to finger tips)

Realizing that none of you know the size of my hands (don't even go there ) but jeez...do these sound right????

Nope, they sound about right........they semmed even smaller when I was missing a bunch of them this morning !

The body of a smallbore chicken silhouette is just a little bit larger than a golf ball. (If you ignore the head and the tail.)

That's why I use golf balls as practice targets. I figure if I can hit a golf ball at regulation distance, it ought to be easier to hit the real thing when I finally get the guts to shoot a real match.

It is hard to judge - sometimes when I pick them up the seem pretty dainty. And when trying to hit them they're always too#@%* small...

Yep thats them. Just think the airgun sils are 1/2 that size

I got a set a few months ago but I knew how big they were from going to shoots so it wasn't so surprising to me. The thing that gets me the most is how much further away they appear at my house compared to the range match. The perspective from the surrounding leads you to believe its a lot further than 44 yards to the chickens. One friend asked for a measurement and found out I was right on the money in distance. That wide open range field makes things feel closer to be sure.

For comparison sakes I tell people the Ram is about the size of mans hand and @110 yards it is a long way away.

How do you plan to setup your range? I am using channel iron set inside the holes of cinder blocks for one bank of 5 over another of 5.

I was just going to set up a 2x6 shelf on a wooden frame and set the targets on that. Rather than worry about moving the targets up and down range, I'll just adjust myself....in other words, I'll have the appropriate distances marked off from the target and shoot from each point depending upon my desired distance to practice.

I tried to see a diagram on the "resources" tab on this site but the pictures won't display on my computer.

I'll let you know how things work out.

Actually, the pictures DO show up on my computer. They wouldn't on the laptop but they do on my desktop....go figure.

I'm going to set up with a sleeve/post system as is depicted in the resources forum. That was my basic concept but it was nice to see it graphically represented.

Should be fun!!
