I am looking for some opinions on a heavy rifle idea. I shoot a 1712 single stage trigger for both classes currently. I am thinking that a very similar gun, same trigger, stock, rigs scope etc, may have some merit only in a heaver weight. I was thinking of a 1710 DHB stocked the same as my 1712.

What are the merits of having both guns very similar only one heavier for heavy division? Seems like weight is the biggest difference these days in standard class.

Why not just put a heavy bbl and some stock weight on a 1712?

Standard rifle also allows triggers as low as they can be adjusted yet they
must be safe from accidental discharge as well as the heavier weight.
The merits of a heavy rifle I think you may have to perceive yourself by
trying one.
Generally though I find the heavy rifle tends to float and not be as twitchy
as a hunter rifle.
The scores from competitors shooting one gun would indicate that there
really isn't a whole lot of benefit.
I think it comes down to learning the gun and capitalising on shot opportunity.

It's really hard to improve on the 1712. Adjustments here and there may suit you better, but it probably won't show up in your score. Leave the 1712 alone and start another rifle fund - you know you need another one anyway...

Thanks for the response. I may have mislead you. I plan on keeping my 1712 for hunter and buying a 1710 hb for heavy gun and having it restocked with the same stock as the 1712. The reasoning for buying the 1710hb over the 1712 is that is already has the same trigger, action etc as my 1712 and already comes with the heavier barrel and no other work needed except a 1712 stock.

I have a friend here who just took a 1712 out of a walnut stock and put it in a Pharr. Let me know if you want me to ask him to save the old one for you. I have no idea what they're worth.

Oops - sorry Kevin. That sounds like fun, and that's the point!

If you want to try the same thing only heavier just add some weight. Make something that will slip over the barrel. Then you could slide it back and forth to see if you like the front end heavier or want the weight more towards the back. Be creative. Hanging weight from the front of the barrel may affect accuracy. You may want to think of something on the stock. Don't worry about the trigger weight a good 2 lb trigger will do you ok. Have FUN
