Howdy from OK - newbie here. Have an older Leupold 6.5x20 and want to change to a dot reticle. Leupold can install a 1/8, 3/8 or 1/2 MOA. Any recommendations or what's the most common? Is there a website showing the different sizes or can someone post pics?

You may want to try a 3/8 dot in your scope. I just bought one of the new FX III silhouette scopes from the big L, its a 30 power with the 3/8 in it. I think its just right. I also sent back a older BR36 (benchrest with 36 power) back to Leupold to put a 3/8 dot in it and it came back a little smaller than the dot in the fixed scope. I think when you tell them what size dot you have to tell them a what yardage you want. ex: a 3/8 dot at 100yrds or a 3/8 dot at 50 yrds. I think the dot is relative to the yardage you want, someone help me out with this. I might have to send the BR 36 back in and tell them I want the same size 3/8 dot that they put in there FX III scopes. Hope this helps

Matter of taste but I bet most would agree that 1/8 is too small for silhouette, 3/8 is most common, 1/2 is getting up there pretty big. Back when I was new at it, a 5/8 sounded like a good idea and it works OK but it just looks huge now. Subtends too much of the target, or maybe it's just that I don't shoot it often and am accustomed to 1/4 or 3/8. I don't know about variables. Don't some change dot size with power?
If it's big enough to let you know where it is while you try to concentrate on the target, that's all that really matters. You'll get comfortable with whatever you use enough.

Bob, reticle size is a matter of preference. Try shooting a few shots with several different sizes, just about any silhouette shooter will be more than willing to let you try "theirs". I shoot a custom 1 minute dot in a Premier 18 X 40 on one rifle, and a 3/8' in the same magnification on another rifle. My son prefers the 1/4 minute, but then his eyes are 30 years younger than mine. I have recently sighted in a new rifle for a newer shooter and they 1/8 minute, I will admit I would have prefered crosshairs to such a small dot, I found myself trying to see the dot and not focusing on the animal. Welcome to the addictive sport and don't hesistate to ask other shooters to try their equipment, it helps you see things that may or may not work for you.

I have tried 1/8th, 1/4th, 3/8ths, and 1/2. My personal thoughts were the first two were to small the 3/8th was pretty close and the 1/2 was to big. There is a Benchrest guy from Washington State, that plays with dot's in scopes, his name is Wally Siebert. I had him put a 5/16 in my 24x Weaver (he will only work on fixed power scopes, no vari), so you can just about pick any size dot that you want and someone will put it in for you. Not to mention any names but there is a guy in N.M. that does scope work, I had him work on one scope of mine years ago and several around here have also, and they have not been 100% pleased with the work on their scopes.

I will have to say, that I also just resently send a scope to the guy in NM to be cleaned and blue printed, it came back looking the same, except the lenses were clean, for the cost, I damm near could have bought a new Weaver scope.
If anybody wants a dot installed I would highly recomend TK LEE, he has done several for me, and they are all great, and the price is about $ 65.00.
As far as dot size, 3/8 or 1/2 is fine but you do have to specify at what distance you need, the best thing is to ask for the 100 yds. distance, it will work fine for the chickens.

I use two premiers one with a 3/8 the other with a leupold dot, a 1/8 24x BR also I have a 3/4 dot on my Hunter smallbore. I probably use the 3/4 scope the most and I have no problems with it. The only problem is keeping the bloody thing on the target. Of the other two in some regards the Leupold dot is good, because we shoot of a night the tapered cross hairs tend to lead your eye to the centre. This certainly helps but of a day it isn't that relevant. The 1/8 is OK most of the time but if there is a bad contrasting back ground I occasionally stuggle with it and eventually it will have a Leupold dot installed. The 3/4 weaver is probably my favourite as if the whole dot is on the target it gives a slight margin for error over the other sizes.
