Hello, 13.5 to 13.75 is about normal for factory rifles and very tall fellows use about 15 to 15.5 LOP but you can always add more if you must. Just remember that in cold weather clothing is going to add more to the LOP.

Does anyone know the proper procedure for removing the butt plate on a 1712? I took the screws out and its almost like it is glued on there. I placed a piece of rubber against the bottom edge and rapped the edge with a screwdriver and it didn't budge. Scared if I bang to hard I'll break the edge off bottom of butt plate. I see no way to pry it as it has zero gap between it and stock.

tmarshall, After I got my 1712, I stopped off at the McMillan joint to get some spacers to extend the length of pull, I was talking to Dick Davis and he told me to make sure I picked up an extra pad, because unless I was better than anyone else in the shop that it was going to be ruined when I took it off.

Wow! no one knows how to easily remove the butt plate from a 1712. It seems insane to take a hammer and chisel to a brand new $1,300.00 gun. Only thing more insane was the local gun smith saying he would have to cut the stock to install a new pad. Oh well!!

I have been working on LOP. I got the butt plate off the my 1712 without damaging the plate or the stock. I used of all things a tree step to screw into the screw holes on the butt plate. I then pulled on it until it broke free. I came up with a 1/2" thick piece of red plastic which I cut to shape and dished out to provide a curve to the pad. I bought a 12"x12" piece of shoe sole material from the local shoe shop for $4.00 and cut and shaped it to glue to the plastic piece I cut out. I have the stock taped for final sanding of the red dished plastic pad. So far it looks really good. As soon as I get it finished I'll try to post a picture.
