Until you're 100%, I would volunteer to help you try to force that 4 inch PVC down some of those vests. Maybe next year we can bring one and walk up and down the line looking for entertainment.

A silly question for a silly rule

Hey Michael,

Not a silly question at all. Until you have seen the 'gauge' in action it doesn't make much sense. The intent is to have and easy to reproduce standard that can be used to prevent those who are inclined to cheat however they can from having the vest tight enough to provide support.

More than once I have seen people on the line with their vest so tight that it looks like a sausage casing. LOL

The rules states "....4 inch thin wall PVC pipe, not less than 30 inches in length, passed through the entire length of the vest.."

In the cases where I have seen the gauge used, it was passed vertically through the vest from top to bottom while the shooter was wearing the vest.

But I think it would be quite a sight to see 20 people shooting with a piece of PVC sticking out of their vest...wonder if those who wore it vertical would shooter better than those who wore it horizontal. Could it be longer than 30" - like 5 feet? Oh, you could have sponsors logos on them. (I can just imagine two shooters with horizontal pipes under their vest trying to shoot next to each other...sorry, being silly again.)

One thing I've learned over the years of being on this forum is there are many ways to interpret the language of a rule. Here is my take on "four inch pipe". I was a plumber by trade and a truck load of pipe to me is not one pipe.

Thanks Al.Now there is no mystery for those without a current,past or imagined rule book.
That may be snug on some of the lady shooters.
The whole idea of the vest in cowboy silhouette is a little recoil pad and the large pockets for timer,loading block,and other misc gear.Not for support per say shooting jacket.
It is very obvious when some are trying to game the system.So please don't.

Now we are going to see some fun pics! Based on this revelation, I volunteer to be the official sliding the pipe under the randomly picked vest....yes it is cheap and sleazy but some what humorous.
