Hi Tim, well I am glad the rifle fit you good, you shot good, for being the first time with a new rifle, some times it takes a while to get use to it, specially the two stage trigger. By the way the reason for the high cheek piece on the stock, is so you can get a firmed spot on your cheek, if you go with the extra high rings, your jaw bone will be resting on the cheek piece of the stock, and will slide back and forth every time you shoulder the rifle, it will never be in the same spot. Stick with the rings you have now.

You are so right. I relized after the first set of Rams (where I started) that I had a very consistant hold on the rifle. The only way I could see correctly through the scope was when the rifle was firmly pressed into my cheek. Only one location would work.

For anyone just starting out, this is hugely important and was a major discovery for me.

If I can just tack on the end here;
Is there any differences between a standard 1712 silhouette and an FWT barreled action? I believed they were the same but am doubting myself now. Reason i ask is i just ordered a McMillan 1700 FWT stock which all went well until the nice lady asked,
"What barrel profile do you have?".
That threw me and i replied,
"Just the standard 1712 Silhouette profile"
She answered " Oh, the Featherweight barrel"
So i ran with that on the order, but just want to check here if the barrel on both models is the same and what Anschutzs lists as Featherweight profile. Anyone know what barrel channel i should be asking for in the stock...... just incase i need to make a quick change.

(ps, one day i'll get this rifle off the ground and shooting, then will cease with the questions and be able to post happy pics and hopefully improving scores too )

Someone will have to confirm this but, I believe the 1712 is FWT because of the silhouette weight rules. The standard 1700 comes with a straight barrel and weights more thant the 1712. They both are 54 actions but the 1700 has a heavier barrel. I believe this is the case. If not, I am sure someone will correct me

Thats pretty much what i thought/hoped was the case. So unlike the straight barrel on say a 1710 or one of the others, 1712s were given that slight taper and cut to 21.6 inches to fall within hunter rules. I get a bit confused too quickly sometimes

Although it's almost like the amount of metal shaved off would amount to the weight of a feather, seeing it's not exactly a super light barrel as such!

I think thats where i got confused after calling, left wondering if there was some real skimpy pencil thin barrel Anschutz had put out there that i knew nothing of and i was going to end up with a stock that would need further work.

I am going to say I cannot (edit meant to say cannot) repeat those scores soon. But, I think I can shoot some nice high A scores. I predict AA by the end of the year in standard. Practice is what it takes.

As far as the 1712 FWT goes there is a number of different models. But they are all built to fit in the IMSSU "HUNTING" gun rules. We have about 11 of them in our club and the variation between them is increadable but they all shoot so good. The new 1712 model is built for the American market, obviously because that's where the sales are. Detritus I would be reluctant to make up a rifle for "HUNTING" gun as it probably won't fit our rules in Australia.
