Well jimmy...if in the future some trendy device for silhouettes comes along I'm sure all you trend setting birds will be on it. I'll bet you 6.5 guys like hip hop, pants on the ground, and Vespas too Its OK...6.5s work and as we get older the lighter recoil will be a blessing

I think I made up my mind on what rifle to build. So my question JB do they make the 6.5x47L in a JR setup hahaha

Well Snakeman, The 6.5 ship has sailed and there are just the two of you standing waiting on the dock for the 7-08 ship to come by probably will be the Titanic, as were both popular about the same time. I'm not into the hip hop crowd and I don't think I've lost anything on the waist line so you don't have to worry about me wearing my pants around my knees. I don't know how kinky Lawyers from Kirkwood, Mo get, so my hope is that my pants issue doesn't dissapoint.

Dan, that would be SMALL RIFLE MAGNUM primers. Big Bear in Billings has them but their limit is 500 per day per person.

Like I said last night. I have some Wolf SRM I used in a 6BR. Well, they actually haven't' been used ( However I do have some once fired, I would make you a deal on ). That is what loaded with when I did. I tried several different brands while working up a load for my gun. Didn't seem to make much difference. Maybe that can be attributed to Mr. Larry Racine's magic with a savage action.

When it comes to paper punching at 600 & 1k yards the 6mm & 7mm certainly are moving to the head of the pack. The 6.5-284 shoots well, but barrels die young. For 600 a 6 BR, or one of its variants, is quite accurate, modest in recoil and the barrel life is much better than a 6.5/284. What's not to like? Some are building switch barrel rifles for 1k and others are sticking with the two gun approach.

The plain old .284 Win has been experiencing a resurgence. It can consistently launch 180 gr cruise missiles at a suitable velocity without the sort of recoil that tries to rip your shoulder off the way some of the mag cases do. To be comparable, a 30 cal rifle probably needs to be using a bullet in the 240 gr range...ouch! Barrel life is supposed to be usefully longer than a 6.5/284 which is nice.

In silhouette, the range where you shoot determines whether a 6.5 is adequate for rams. It does not matter much if the wind drift is a lot less on turkeys if you can not knock a ram over. Zwolle is an interesting case. The breeze frequently fills in from the right in the afternoon and if the turkeys are facing to the right bullet selection can make a difference between catching one in the tail and one that is a few inches off. Having a good spotter, as always, can make a big difference too.

6.5s are fun to shoot, but I have remarked to people on occasion that they could not go wrong with a 7-08...but get an 8 twist barrel.

Where's our buddy from Colorado in this discussion anyway. We could use a few stories about what a 7-08 will do that nothing else can accomplish to liven things up.

Bob, the goo roo has been "missing" for many years.

Mr Briscoe....the 284 is now the caliber for 1000 yard given the poor barrel life and other issues with the 6.5/284. As for 600 yd bench rest Jerry Kloeppel ....one of our silhouette guys....just set a world record with a 6 mm Dasher ( some sort of lengthened etc BR) with a .65 5 shot group from a light rifle I think all rifles are fun to shoot but only accurate ones are interesting (apologies to Col. Whelen) As i remarked before I miss wind or no wind and have found that the wind moving me is more an issue than the wind moving my bullet I just don't buy into the hype ...6.5's are not a grand improvement...they are just another useful cartridge with its own draw backs. However if it works for you then use it as it has that advantage over anything else...it inspires confidence
