There hasn't been time for extended play mine seems great and there's no doubt that Leupold will fix any problem that comes up. Leupold's cost, but performance and service make them good value.
Leupold Silhouette Scopes

These were supposed to be a silhouette scope. Not just a SB silhouette scope and not just a HP silhouette scope but a silhouette scope period. I can understand that the scope was designed with weight limitations in mind and very large focusing abilities may cause the design to be heavier. That may be the reason they can not be used at air rifle distances but this having to chose between 40 to 200 and 200 to 500 is ridiculous. I own four 18x40's that started out life as 6.5x20's that were non-EFR. This means that they have a 50 yard minimum focus setting on the objective bell. All of these scopes will focus down to 38 meters. The AO's were reset when they were boosted. Three of these are presently on HP guns. They will also focus at 500 meters and beyond without difficulty. This proves to me that leupold has done it correct before, they can do it again.
These scopes are not cheap by any stretch of the imagination. When you are paying $500+ for something you have the right to expect it to work right out of the box the first time. In one of George's earlier posts he stated
That was an concern at first but I contacted a person at Leupold that supposedly was in on the design of the scopes. She told me in no uncertain terms that the scopes focused down to 40Meters as they were "silhouette" scopes and that is what they were designed for. She mentioned them NOT being EFR and if you wanted to shoot "gallery" (or air rifle) you would need to add the 50' adaptor.
George also stated
I will not ship you one until this is cleared up, and I suggest you do the same rather than getting into a ship back and forth scenario to get it fixed. I also feel that Leupold will make it right, they have too much $ in equipment / design/ marketing / advertising to just "dump" the project.
Both of these statements are correct in spirit and this is
NOT an attack on George. I am merely pointing out that representatives from Leupold have stated that this should perform at 40 meters and George has cautioned people about getting into an expensive process of shipping these scopes back and forth.
Leupold offering to pay the shipping both ways or even to reset it for free is mediocre. Don't accept mediocrity!!!!!! If we accept it then we will have to live with it. What we need to do is insist that this product is offered in an acceptable fashion. As a consumer your loudest voice is your patronage and your money. If you refuse to part with your monies or patronage due to an inferior product or poor customer service then the companies must either change their products/practices to meet the customer's demand or suffer a loss of profits due to poor sales. Thank you for your time. Mark Varner

I thank you Mark, many of us feel the same way. There is a large group of folks that are looking for a "T-24" Leupold... Many are willing to pay the extra $ for the Leupold glass, warranty, and service.
The good news is they are listening... I have heard concerns voiced to other makers and they say "Sorry, there is nothing I can do to change that". Ask Chuck Deason about it. They (Leupold) are still working on refining the design. I got a call Friday afternoon that I missed. This was the gentleman that had the clearance from his boss to spend the time and $ to fix this. Let's see where this is going and what "Good" news they have for me on Monday as promised. He said I would be happy. I asked for Air rifle to 500Meters, he felt that was un-doable. I hope they do have the 38Meters to 500Meters that would be my guess. He did want to "recall' my on hand inventory to retrofit / replace, so I will report back.
Also - NO ONE, please do not assume that us talking about this in a public forum is considered as an attack by me. I do not sell things only to make $$$. I like to think that the hour(s) per day giving advice help some out. I think the experiences of all are valid and I do my best to relay to the MFG.
Take Timney and the CZ triggers. That is (would be) a "cash cow". I work past the point of trying to help that project along. I met with them at SHOT this year and spoke with Calvin about what I needed to help them test. He sent me his "final version" of the fix. It failed the safety test on the first 2 actions I tested it on. = I do not sell them any more.
I think we may be discounting our "voice" in this matter. Let's continue to push and prod them in the right direction. As I have stated before, I don't think they would have spent the $ for MFG, and marketing just to loose everyone and scrap it. It may take some time, but if we end up with a 24X (BR) that has less than 1 rotation on the A/O and can focus from 38M to 500M, we will have filled a niche in the market.
THEN, I want to make some $$$$....LOL

George,
Please keep us informed of the progress of your retrofitted / replaced inventory. I posted because I am considering buying a 30X for my HPHR and while it would be acceptable for my present application it is unacceptable to me to spend $500+ for something that isn't what it can and should be. I feel as well that we are "discounting" our voice in this matter. I also hoped that by sharing my opinion publicly that maybe others who felt the same way, but were hesitant due to concerns of being ostracized for saying so, would also speak out and we could get this resolved before allot of unnecessary dollars were spent in shipping. In the present situation, customer dissatisfaction is sure to abound. I enjoyed the cash cow reference. Let's hope that these don't turn into question marks or dogs or before they've had a fair chance to succeed. Mark Varner

For an update on my experience with Luepold and my FX III 30X40. I got it back from Leupold last week. The paperwork from Leupold reflects they adjusted the parallax down to 25 yards. I mounted it on a 54.18 and took it to the range yesterday. At 44 meters I could read words on the target but the words were fuzzy. I could have gotten a setting for that distance but who wants a 44 meter setting in our sport. I had to go out to 46 meters for the target to be crisp and clear. Now any silhouette shooter that's been in the game for more than 10 minutes knows there is a big difference between 25 yards and 46 meters - even without the range finder I was using.
Maybe I can find that guy George has been talking with at Leupold - so far not a good experience. The end result is that the scope I have is of no use to a small bore silhouette shooter as of today. I was planning on using it to shoot at the Texas State match and PeEll next month and at Winnsboro but now there isn't enough time to get it to Leupold and back before leaving for Texas - may be able to use it at Winnsboro if Leupold will get it right. I'm not about to show up at the bigger matches with a new scope that I haven't practice with. So I'm back to my B&L 36.

John,
As soon as I get the info, I will pass on the resolution to you. I will hopefully report back tomorrow with where they are at. I was already told that the engineers had gotten them down to just below 40Yards but that it limited it to 200 yards on the top end. I hope at a min they have it now from just below 40 yards to 500 meters plus. Even though you did not get your scope through me, I will try and get you a "call tag" for shipping and expidited repair. Hopefully you, and the others, will post back. My e-mail is
[email protected] let's get together off-line.

For what it's worth, I had the opportunity today to try my 25x on the smallbore range and cranked down as far as it would go, it focused perfectly on the chickens. Maybe I got lucky?

So if the scope focus down to 40 meters and out 500 meters, do they have an adapter to focus down to 50 - 75 ft?
